In starship classification, a science vessel is a limited-role starship. It is not well armed, but instead carries several laboratories, advanced sensors or communication equipment, and in some cases, advanced deflector shields or active jamming systems. Ships of this class are used for scientific research missions, such as observing the collapse of a star, mapping newly discovered planets and nebulas or simply serving as an isolated location for hazardous experiments. While most science vessels are designed for short term missions, certain science vessels, sometimes classifed as "Explorers", are capable of long-term missions.
