Following the successes of the Communist Revolution in 279, the nation has begun an aggressive program of economic development stemming from its use of central planning to coordinate industrial and commercial growth. The nation is active in promoting its ideology worldwide, and the new military buildup has caused concern among other nations, particularly bordering states. Vetalia's Communist Party is keen on avoiding the mistakes of the past and wants to achieve "developed socialism", although its commitment to these ideas is uncertain.

Vetalian culture has been influenced by the nation's incredibly strong economic growth and liberal policies in regard to civil rights. Many of the poorer systems are shocked by what they percieve as the decadence and extravagance of the wealthy Vetalians, and on the more socially liberal planets "Vetalian" is used disparagingly to refer to any kind of profiglate or wasteful spending, particularly in regard to physical luxuries and pursuit of pleasure. Indeed, Vetalian society places a far higher value on material wealth and comfort than other societies, and encourages citizens to indulge in them as much as possible. The nation's cultural centers are well-funded and expansive, with cultural institutions spread across the entire planet to encourage and revive local cultural styles. Recently, the Vetalian government has been spending the majority of its cultural funding on the restoration of older buildings from before the planet's unification with emphasis on the architectural designs and culinary traditions of the nation's ethnic groups. At present, the most significant project is the new Vetalian Galactic Opera; the Ş590 billion, 10-year project will create the largest performance hall in
