The Protectorate of Neon Skies is a very large, safe nation, remarkable for its compulsory military service. Its compassionate, cynical population of 85 million are ruled with an iron fist by the dictatorship government, which ensures that no-one outside the party gets too rich. In their personal lives, however, citizens are relatively unoppressed; it remains to be seen whether this is because the government genuinely cares about its people, or if it hasn't gotten around to stamping out civil rights yet.
The government -- a sprawling, bureaucracy-choked, socially-minded morass -- juggles the competing demands of Education, Commerce, and Healthcare. The average income tax rate is 49%, but much higher for the wealthy. A healthy private sector is led by the Information Technology industry, followed by Automobile Manufacturing and Pizza Delivery.
Hundreds of thousands of convicts work as slaves in Neon Skies's many privately-owned prisons, married couples must call each other "darling" or risk a fine, a government program is underway to revitalize Neon Skies's beaches, and schools have extensive counseling programs for troubled students. Crime -- especially youth-related -- is totally unknown, thanks to a well-funded police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. Neon Skies's national animal is the Liger, which frolics freely in the nation's many lush forests, and its currency is the Whole Milk.
