There were 702,544,002 valid votes cast.
The Social Democratic-Liberal Democratic-Green alliance won 166 seats, the Moderates won 33, the Popular Democrats won 17. The Republicans won two seats.
The election was produced a Social Democratic majority independent of the Liberal Democrats' support. Their majority, however, was only of three seats, excluding the Greens, so risk-averse Lady Senator Simpson accepted the Liberal Democrats as coalition partners. She also thought losing Liberal Democratic support in Parliament would lead to a loss of popular support and to an alliance between the Liberal Democrats and Moderates, which could potentially compete with the Social Democrats.
