There were 454,427,491 valid votes cast.
The Social Democratic-Green alliance won 131 seats; the Liberal-Conservative alliance won 86. The independent Liberal Democrats won a single seat.
The election saw depressed turnout and a surge in support for the Liberals and Conservatives. Lord Shackleford's personal popularity had dipped from its astronomical heights at the beginning of the previous general election; this is the common explanation for the results. The Liberal Democrats greatly improved their popular performance over the previous election, but were unable to translate this into seats.
