There were 472,010,026 valid votes cast.

The Social Democratic-Green alliance won 131 seats; the Liberal-Conservative alliance won 86. The independent Liberal Democrats won a single seat.

The election saw depressed turnout and a surge in support for the Liberals and Conservatives. Lord Shackleford's personal popularity had dipped from its astronomical heights at the beginning of the previous general election and many Social Democratic voters stayed home confident in their party's untouchability; this is the common explanation for the results. The Liberal Democrats greatly improved their popular performance over the previous election, but were unable to translate this into seats.
