The Social Democratic-Green alliance won 172 seats; the Liberal-Conservative alliance won 45. The Liberal Democrats won one.
Lord Morrissey's freshness carried the day in the left's largest majority yet. Worst hit were the Conservatives, who lost more than a third of their seats the second election in a row and were the only party not to gain at least one seat. The Liberal Democrats re-entered Parliament (Virginia Halley won back her seat). The Greens came within four percent of the Liberals' popular vote share.
