Aldebaran is the brightest star in the constellation Taurus and one of the brightest stars in the nighttime sky. It has the Bayer designation Alpha Tauri. Because of its location in the head of Taurus, it has historically been called the Bull's Eye. Aldebaran has the appearance of being the brightest member of the more scattered Hyades cluster, which is the closest star cluster to Earth. However, it is merely located in the line of sight between the Earth and the Hyades, and is actually an independent star. For more RL information, please see wikipedia:Aldebaran.

Aldebaran and supposed planets orbiting the star have several appearances in NationStates, and likely more will nations will stake their claims in the future.

Aldebaran has at least four planets:

  • The second planet, thus called Aldebaran-2, is very earth-like, but has no native intelligent life and is thus very attractive for human settlers.
  • The fourth planet, Aldebaran-4, also called Llyrdis, is home to an alien civilizations, the Varrda. It is later colonised by humans.

There are several events and civilizations in the Aldebaran system, but it cannot be determined on which planets they take place:

  • There is a human colony, New Aberdeen, on one of the planets, or maybe on an orbital platform circling the star or one of its planets. This is were the Akira class spaceship was developed.
  • There are several alien species native to the system: the Varrda (as mentioned above), a species of sea-turtle like aliens, a species which abducts artists from Earth to perform for them through the company Narabedla, Inc., and a species known as the Taurans, which are constantly in war with the human race.
  • In Naki Mysticism, Aldebaran is one possible origin of the Aryan race.
