Alex Canning is the first and current Chief Minister of the International Protectorate (head of government) of Ad'ihan, who was appointed Chief Minister under weird circumstances.
His party, Green Ad'ihan, had had a poor showing in the first-ever elections (October 18 – November 7, 2143), winning only 5 of 56 seats in the Ad'ihan Senate. However, as the dominant party, the Parti populaire ad'ihanais, was short of a majority, it formed a coalition government with the greens and the pro-independence Ad'ihan Freedom Movement. This coalition still did not have enough votes to push through a Chief Minister from the People's Party, as the largest opposition party Federal Ad'ihan Front, along with some members of Conservateur Ad'ihan threatened to block any such appointment.
A compromise was reached that saw Alex Canning become confirmed as the first Chief Minister, when the Senate passed a resolution supporting his appointment by 42 to 8 (6 abstentions), which led Governor Henna Jordan to appoint him as Chief Minister.
He has taken a controversial stance about the interim appointment of current Governor Simon Collins, appointed after the unexpected death of Jordan. Canning has made his disappointment that "a military man was appointed for the job of a diplomat" known, leading to retaliation by the pro-CCL Federal Ad'ihan Front, which threatened to call a vote of no-confidence against Canning. This led to Canning resigning his Cabinet by calling a snap election.
