Artificial Intelligence
Ai is the Holy Grail of computer science, and is well within the grasp of postmodern societies. This breakthough allows computers to mimic intelligent behavior to the point where they cannot be told from true intelligence. They are not truly intelligent, for they have no command of Qualia, or the intrinsic "chairness of the chair", but they can be vastly "more intelligent" than their human designers.
Common belief on AIs is that they can only be created through a controlled evolution, such as the Dawson Algorhythm used to make PROTEUS, ARES, and POSEIDON. These AI systems can be a boon to a good RP, but they are potential pitfall if used offensively against another nation, and can lead to accusations of godmoddery.
