The Sublime and Eternal Empire of Beautancus

The Sublime and Eternal Empire of Beautancus is a post-modern Imperial Republic located in south-eastern Jethnea. Beautancus does not see itself as a part of Western culture, though certain aspects of the government's organization were borrowed from Western models.

To a non-Cussian, Beautancus appears to be a harsh, anachronistic, authoritarian nation, due in large part to the rigidity of Beautancus' caste system, high tax rates, and its all-consuming military machine.

Despite the often times brutal nature of the government, social welfare and education remain central foci, and many of the nation's resources are expended on these concerns. The strict, theocratic nature of the government also requires that politicians uphold the Sublime Articles of the Imperial Cult, which mandate the humane treatment of all human beings, no matter their birth.

Though technically a capitalist nation, Beautancus' "private" sector is dominated by politicians, landed nobles, and former military personnel, ensuring that the nation's industiral might is focussed on Arms Manufacture, and Weapons Development. The agricultural sector was recently nationalized, in response to the nation's population boom.

In the past Beautancus has proven to be more than willing to wage war, for a variety of causes. According to the Sublime Articles, war is a necessary part of creation, serving to re-establish the perfect order of the universe at its dawn.

Economy: Beautancus’ economy was and is designed to support and facilitate the growth and advancement of the national military machine. As a result Mining, Arms Manufacture, Information Technology Development, and Bio-Technology are the major industries, and non-military career fields. Agriculture has traditionally been the major trade resource in Beautancus’ history, but recent booms in population requires that all surplus produce remain within the nation now, to feed the burgeoning masses.

Emperor Janus IV Janus IV is perhaps the most beloved God-Emperor in Beautancus' history. After taking the Throne from his inept and heretical brother August in September of 1996, Janus reversed national policy to accord unrestricted civil rights to all citizens, regardless of caste or class. Much like his father before him, Janus has proven to be of mild, methodical temperament. For the most part Janus strives to maintain the image of the just, merciful God-Emperor from the days of old. His recent wedding to the socialite Dutchess Andariel Jelbrech was the most watched televised event in national history.

President Eli Myllyharju Richest and most influential President in Beautancus' history and still the most eligible batchelor the nation. President Myllyharju began his life as a humble Finnish farmer on the wind-swept tundra of northern Faison. After graduating from the National Preperatory Military Science Institue in Ttoille at the age of 17, the young Eli Myllyharju enlisted in the [i]Immortals[/i] and served with distinction during the First Masonic War (1973-1976). Returning home as a victorious young Captain, Myllyharju retired to civilian life to enjoy the fruit of his successes by using his political connections to secure valuable Government Loans, and Non-Existant Interest Rates which he used to found a small Research and Development Firm, Myll-Tech Inc. in October of 1977. Myll-Tech would go on to become a soft-ware and bio-technology giant, earning Myllyharju hundreds of billions of Labor Credits through the late 80's and early to mid 90's. When August ascended the throne in 1995 and declared all private businesses to be nationalized, Myllyharju was amongst the first to cry foul. As the situation grew steadily worse and worse, culminating with the Mid-Summer Massacres of 1996, Myllyharju pushed Janus to take his older brother's throne. After Janus was secure on the throne, and all had been set right, free and open elections were held, with Myllyharju running on a National Unity/Centrist platform. Since his election in 1998 Myllyharju has seen Beautancus' economy rebuilt, and the slow but steady process(es) of modernization and globalization undertaken again.

Vice President Arthur Morrow Handpicked by President Myllyharju to succeed him, Arthur Morrow has one of the brightest futures in all of Beautancus. Emerging from the Third Masonic War as a Fighter Pilot Ace, Morrow retired as a [i]Sun Guard[/i] Colonel, just short of promotion to General. In 1990 following a brief period out of the public eye (due in large part to his marriage to Elaine Vetraelli and the subsequent birth of his daughter Margeruitte), Morrow ran for his Province's seat in the National Congress, and won. As with many "liberal" politicians, Morrow was ousted upon August's rise to power. After Janus was established on the Throne, Eli Myllyharju approached Morrow with an offer to run with him in the 1998 elections. Morrow has remained active throughout the administration, and now it seems that the final months before the election will be spent preparing Morrow for the Presidency.

Protector-General Xerxes Haakon Awarded the highest military rank and honors in the nation, Xerxes Haakon is the most decorated, celebrated warrior in Beautancus' recent memory. Haakon is considered "old school" despite his willingness (in some cases eagerness) to accept and utilize the modern age's rapid technological advances. Haakon was awared the rank of Protector-General (General of the Military) after his overwhelming victory of Masonic forces in the Third and final Masonic War (1987). Since then, Haakon has devoted much of his time to the development and post-modernization of the nation's elite infantry division, the Immortals. Haakon also sided with Janus during the brief struggle for the Imperial Throne, lending the future God-Empeor the use of his personal guard in arresting August.

The Immortals

As Beautancus settles into Jethnea, whispers and rumors fly regarding the nature and might of the mysterious warrior-cult/military branch known as the Immortals. By the far the most respected soldiers in the God-Emperor's service, this collection of professional soldiers, psykers, and saints are the first and last line of defense of the limitless multitudes of the Sublime and Eternal Empire. Easily recognizable for their seemingly anachronistic body-armor, these brave men and women are the rank and file of the all consuming Imperial-Cult, the constantly active will of the Demiurge made corporate in flesh and adamant.

Commanded personally by the legendary Protector-General Xerxes Haakon, the Immortals are in fact the oldest, and most advanced single branch of the Empire's government. As many as 5 million souls serve as Immortals at any given time, with that number divided amongst the Martial Service, the Ecclesiarchy, and the Inquisition. All Ecclesiarchs, or Clerics of the God-Emperor are Immortals, though membership to the Inquisition is not conditional or required.

All Immortals are highly trained and efficient killing machines, capable of fighting under nearly any conditions. The harshness of the landscape that dominated their original homeland took a very deep toll on the soldiers of Haakon's generation, and thus Modern Doctrine has been shaped around the principle of universalism and improvisation. Immortals are not organized in permanent squadrons, rather forming up according to the need of each mission. Unlike the more numerous National Defense Brigades, Immortals are not stationed in military bases, or garrison-towns. As in the days of old, the Immortals make their homes in the massive Cathedral-Fortresses that serve as the center of the day to day religious life for the citizens of Beautancus. From here, the Immortals provide not only security, but tender mercy and wisdom. Most Cathedrals provide theological education for Immortals, training them in language, ethics, and history along with Holy Doctrine.

In the field, Immortals are clad in advanced body armor purposefully fashioned to resemble the armor their predecessors wore in the Middle Ages. This armor provides limited life support, communications systems, and rather durable and flexible arms protection. Family weapons, passed from parent to child and from mentor to student are still common and used to encourage terror in enemies. The standard fire-arm of the Immortals is a simple, durable Full/Semi Automatic EM Pulse Rife, specially designed for high-velocity 11mm shells, fired at a rate of about 1000 shots per minute at full auto.

The Imperial Cult

One of the symbols of the Imperial Cult. The gryphon has ancient, and very deep meaning to the Clergy-Nobility, dating to the days before the first God-Emperor.

The Imperial Cult permeates every aspect of day to day life in Beautancus and Her Provinces (Calypso, Faison, Rhones Chapelle, South Cisleithanien) and Dependencies. Though often misunderstood, it is the will of God-Emperor that the world become well acquainted with this ancient, and beautiful culture. The following notes are not in historical order, as the appear in the Sublime Articles, they are also paraphrased for the benefit of non-Cussian readers.

1) The Demiurge created this universe, and existed before this universe. Though connected and present in all matter, the Demiurge is seperate from, and beyond all matter.

2) Human beings and any related demi-human species (elven kind, dwarves, etc.) are created in the Image of the Demiurge, as represented by the self-awareness and creativity. This image is only represented in the living being, united in flesh and mind as a whole soul. When death claims the soul, it ceases to exist, at least by the definition that most civilizations and philosophies use to describe life. The greater spark of intelligence passes through the blood, through the greater living family, while the flesh of the being returns to the universe.

3) All life is sacred, as it represents a vital and unique portion of the Demiurge's formulae. For this reason, it is anathema for an adherent of the Imperial Cult to take life without reason. The masses are called to be at peace, and to refrain from making war, as the taint of bloodshed is too great for most souls.

4) The Warriors of Beautancus shall bear the burden of sin for the masses. So that the people may live their lives free from moral corruption, the Warriors of Beautancus shall become Immortal, their minds forever chained to the living world. They shall forever be reborn, and divided until the need for war is no more. "Immortals never die, they are just redeployed."

5) To ensure that the Immortals continue to serve the Will of the People, and not their own, they shall be live their lives by the Strictures of the Hardest Way, recorded in the Sublime Articles. No matter the order of her birth, the life of a commoner is always worth more than the life of an Immortal.

6) Honor similar to that accorded the God-Emperor and President of Beautancus is also accorded to friendly or allied world-leaders. This honor is religious devotion, and may seem strange to non-Cussians at first. It is genuine, and in fact, it is a great honor for a Cussian to be allowed to worship before mighty foreign leaders.

7) Enemies of the State, are due to the nature of the government and people of Beautancus referred to and looked upon as Heretics. Heretics not only defy the will of the God-Emperor of Beautancus, but the will of Demiurge. In order for the Universe to survive in a state of balance, any agents of chaos must be removed from existence, often times with extreme prejudice. The only violent action acceptable for a non-Immortal Cussian is that taken against a Heretic.
