History

The 20th century and onwards

The 20th century marked some of the most important events in the Brutaltopian history.

In 1919, in the wake of the Bolshevik Revolution and the Russian Civil War, the Brutaltopians took advantage of the chaos in Russia and declared their independence. However, the newborn republic established by a local businessman, Anton Valdemar and his supporters, seriously suffered from the ensuing conflicts. Several factions including communists, fought a prolonged low intensity conflict against the republic, eventually leading to a military coup d'état in January 1958 that deposed the government and placed an army General, Vladimir Fukov as the head of state. This marked the beginning of the so-called Fukov regime, with General Fukov adopting an autocratic way of ruling, going as far as nominating himself the Keiser (Emperor) and even renaming the nation after himself.

In 1989, after the death of Emperor Fukov, his son Andrei, took the throne. During the 1990s and early 21st century, there has been notable progress in the liberalisation of the Brutaltopian society. Despite this, the nation still remains highly isolated from rest of the world, mostly through means of strict control of communications and travel.

Politics

Brutaltopia's political system is mostly built around the principle of heavy centralization. While the constitution affirms democratic government, most of the power lies in the hands of the Keiser (Emperor) Andrei Fukov. After the 1958 dissolution of the parliament, nearly all decisions in the governing process are made by the Keiser, or by the Imperiumial Valtei Kanslie (Imperial Council of State).

The Imperiumial Valtei Kanslie is comprised of four Kanslierere (Councillors), each appointed by the Keiser, each heading their own department. These are:

  • Utvaltei Imperiumial Osastoi (Imperial Department of Foreign Affairs)
    • Kanslierer Nea Fukov, daughter of Keiser Fukov.
  • Valtei Imperiumial Osastoi (Imperial Department of State Affairs)
    • Kanslierer Tomas Wentus
  • Sekuritie Imperiumial Osastoi (Imperial Department of Security)
    • Kanslierer Mattei Berg
  • Manei Imperiumial Osastoi (Imperial Department of Finance)
    • Kanslierer Katia Veler

Geography

Brutaltopia consists of a group of islands in the Arctic Ocean, between the North Pole and mainland Europe.

50% of Brutaltopia is covered by glaciation and snowfields. However, the warm North Atlantic Current moderates the cold Arctic climate, keeping the waters open and navigable for most of the year. The midnight sun lasts from late April to late August, and polar night from late October to early February.

The capital and largest city of Brutaltopia is Ryazan, other major cities are Syzran and Serov in the south. Smaller towns are Saratov, Elista, Tynda and Atka.

Demographics

Brutaltopia has a very homogenous population, both ethnically and linguistically, with only a small (5%) Russian minority. The indigenous Brutish language is not a member of any wider language family, though over the centuries, it has been heavily influenced by the Uralic languages.

Military

The military of Brutaltopia consists of four branches: the Kansoi Armeie (People's Army), Kansoi Mare Armeie (People's Navy), Kansoi Ilme Armeie (People's Air Force) and Sekuritie Polisie (Security Police). Peacetime strength of the military is 2.4 million soldiers active, and 30 million people in reserve.
