Here's a skeletal article for Solacewald; I took the headings from another cantonal stub, transfered the little I could glean of the 'Woods and fleshed out only my own military section. Still, with a just a few words here and there you could get a good stub going, and maybe others would contribute in their areas of interest and expertise.

‘’’Solacewald’’’ is the most liberal-minded and egalitarian of all cantons in the ‘’’Confederated City States of Mikitivity’’’. This extends even to the root toponym of its cantonal name, which not only looks the same in English and in German but it has the same meaning.

Cantonal Forces

Solacewald’s liberality is forcefully practiced in its Cantonal Forces = Kantoneswehr. On the organizational level, it does not avail itself of the subterfuges other cantons use to thwart the requirement that generals must be appointed by the confederal government.

Table of Solacewald ranks and grades
English rank or grade English command German rank or grade German command
Colonel Regiment, Field Hospital Oberst Regiment, Militaerkrankenhaus
Major Battalion Major Bataillon
Captain Company, Aid Station> Hauptmann Kompanie, Sanitaetsabteilung
Lieutenant* Platoon Leutnant Zug

Corporal Squad Leader Obergefreiter Abteilungfuehrer
Lance Corporal Team Leader Gefreiter Mannschaftfuerher
Forresters** not applicable Walders keine Ernennung
* Unofficial rank used in Solacewald. In the rest of the country, like correspondents on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, all lieutenants are senior lieutenants.
** Used for all Army Corps, Engineering Corps and Medical Corps private soldiers, to foster cantonal and interservice solidarity.

Egalitarian Solacewalders may be, but they realize that the military requires a hierarchy to function. However, each rung of the hierarchy must have a specific military purpose or it is rejected. Consult the table on the right to see how flat the command structure of the Solacewald Forces really is.

Furthermore, input from the rank and file is solicited as much as operational requirements permit when the cantonal government appoints officers. Most promotion boards consist of two representatives from the canton (usually one government and one opposition member), one staff officer (usually a major) from the Confederal Defence Staff = Bundeswehrstab, one senior field officer (usually a colonel) from the Kantoneswehr and one non-commissioned soldier elected by the enlisted ranks serving under the candidate officer.

This consideration even extends to the non-commissioned officers. All three to five members of a fire team or crew take turns being the team leader. Every three months, the team leaders collectively pick the squad leader, whether from among their number or from the privates. Since the role in part of sergeant majors (and mere sergeant in these Cantonal Forces, since all sergeants are on the same level) is to present the concerns of the enlisted to the officers, sergeants are elected every six months from by the non-commissioned members in the unit.Cateogry:Provinces
