The Citadel of Excalbia is a 12th century fortress located on the cliffs of Citadel Island overlooking the Valmiera River. It was the seat of the Baron of Excalbia in the 13th century and became the seat of King Alsgood, the Great after he unified the Highland Kingdom in the 16th century and made Citadel Excalbia his capital.

The Citadel is now flanked by the 17th century Sweyn Castle, built as a more modern residence for the Highland kings, and the 18th century Chancery. Today, Sweyn Castle serves as the residence of the Imperial family. Also on the cliffs are a number of administrative buildings, a zoopark and the Redeemer Church, built early in the 19th century to serve as the parish church of the Imperial family.
