Description

The Domain of UL was a democratic region that took itself far too seriously. Its members discussed topics from intergalactic trade to local military coups. The region was based in Ireland, but had expanded to other countries thanks largely to Saorstat's efforts (See History). The region is now defunct.

History

Foundation of the Domain

The Domain was founded by a group of nations who originated in the University of Limerick, it was founded towards the end of the 20th Century. The oldest members died off and many other nations declined due to the ending of academic life and the work loads of others; computer access was always an issue. Cocobongo and Grand Munster (today's Saorstat) have existed since the foundation and were always at the core of developments of the region.

The Saorstat Age

In the early 21st Century, the Domain met its golden age. This was largely brought about by the influx of Canadian-based nations caused by Saorstat's mission to Canada. The Domain was powerful, wealthy and even though there were a few small conflicts, the time was mostly peaceful. At this time there was an alliance known as the Grand Alliance. This was composed of any nation who wished to join and effectively managed the Domain. It furthered the Domain's interests and promoted unity. Treaties and united military forces were created and even a common currency was established after much labouring. During this period, Saorstat was the Delegate for the majority of the period and holds the record for the longest period in office. The one conflict noteable during this period was the war between Gurthy and the Azmost/Punjab Alliance. Gurthy was invaded and annexed by Punjabea and Azmost, much to the disappointment of the rest of the GA.

Collapse of the Grand Alliance

Unfortunately, in 2004, discord overcame the GA. This was brought about by the declining number of members and questions brought up about the control structure of the GA. Punjabea and Tomorro, two prominant GA members, questioned Saorstat's entitlement to leadership of the GA, claiming that he had not been elected. This arose chiefly because of Saorstat's demands to Punjabea over dismantling their space weapons platform. Saorstat quoted a treaty that neither Punjabea nor Tomorro had heard of. This conflict led to the Grand Alliance's collapse and the region entered a turmoil-filled period.

The Punjabean Period

During this period, Punjabea became Delegate of the Domain of UL. Also during this time a nation known as New Gurthy came to the Domain. New Gurthy was a violent nation who allied with no one and insulted and threatened war against all the nations of the Domain. It was an offshoot of the nation of Gurthy, formed by the refugees ejected when Punjabea & Azmost annexed the nation. They demanded their land back, but were refused. They then began threatening war against the two nations. Punjabea and Azmost wanted military action against New Gurthy, but Saorstat and Tomorro objected. Eventually, Punjabea and Azmost invaded New Gurthy and that, it seemed, was that. However, it was revealed that Punjabea & Azmost had created New Gurthy just to have something to invade. This scandal led to Punjabea stepping down and Saorstat was restored as Delegate.

The Galactic Age

After this period, nations within the Domain began to explore space for the first time. Saorstat was the first and they established colonies on other planets as well as developing space defense systems. Then Punjabea went through another of its infamous political changes and entered space as well. Punjabea constructed a space elevator and trade flourished. However, non-space travelling nations began to fear these new superpowers, Hothistan in particular. This age ended with the departure of Azmost and the demise of Saorstat and Hothistan.

Collapse

In April 2006, Cocobongo and Punjabea were the only nations left in the Domain. Punjabea made attempts to discuss the future of the Domain, but they were ignored. So, in late April, Punjabea left the Domain for the Axis of Absurdity. Cocobongo remained as the sole inhabitant of the Domain until May 2006, before leaving for the United Federation of Planets. With no inhabitants, the Domain of UL collapsed and was removed from the Nationstates network. All that remains in the region now is the monument Punjabea left commemorating the Domain of UL. Part of the region around the monument has been designated as a national park and day tours to it can be taken from Punjabea.

The United Federation of Cocobongo (Departed)

Cocobongo was the oldest, largest and arguably most powerful nation in the Domain and was like the region's grandfather: Quiet, but don't wake him up. Cocobongo was an isolationist power being involved in bilateral treaties only. Cocobongo usually came to lead the Domain when the other young, whippersnapper nations were too busy arguing; it led the Domain for periods comparable to those of Saorstat. Its government is interplanaterian federalist, governing an ever growing number of colonies connected by their Stargate network. Cocobongo has since moved to the United Federation of Planets.

The Galactic Empire of Saorstat (Defunct)

Saorstat was the member who had been UN Delegate for the longest period of time. Arguably the creator of the Golden Age, due to his recruitment policies. A staunch democratic nation, famous for its unusually named councils. Also the first nation in the Domain to enter space. Before the Golden Age, long before the existence of other nations the Galactic Empire of Saorstat was called Grand Munster, but following the dissolution of the Republic and internal war in two of the Provinces, Grand Munster re-emerged as a new federated Empire, founded in the largest Province of Saorstat. The Empire was declared and the bi-cameral Houses of the Oireacthas were reformed into the unicameral Imperial Senate with regional governors taking over from Provincial Assemblies and Territorial Lietenants. Following huge pan-Empire Democratic protests, it was obvious that Constitutional Reform was needed since the system was unrepresentative, the Imperial Commission for the Empire reformed the Constitution and the bi-cameral parliament of the Imperial Oireacthas returned. Today there are Assemblies in all of the Provinces and Governors on the Territories since some regions are sparcely populated. The Lok Sabha of the Federal Imperial Oirachtas is directly elected by the people in all of the Provinces and Territories, the Raja Sabha is formed by the Governors of the Territories and Premiers of the Provinces as well as members elected from special panels. The head of the Empire was His Most Imperial Majesty, Emperor Frederick-Napoleon III. Federal Prime Minister was the Right Honourable Arthur H Cosgrave, MLS. Minister for Foreign Affairs was the Honourable Baron Von Richtoven, MRS.

The Galactic Empire of Saorstat collapsed in April 2006 for reasons unknown.

The Galactic Federation of Punjabea (Departed)

This is only the latest incarnation of Punjabea. It began as a dictatorship, then became a republic, then a dictatorship again, then a communist monarchy and finally, a galactic federation. Punjabea's political turmoil created interesting topics of discussion during slow news periods. Punjabea left the Domain in April 2006 for the Axis of Absurdity.More on Punjabea>>>

The Democratic Socialist State of Azmost (Departed)

Was known as the Domain of UL's resident warmonger. If you need someone to create a conflict or even a war, Azmost is your man. Its political system is unclear, but believed to be a dictatorship. Don't believe what's in the nation's title. Azmost left the Domain in March 2006 for CnC Universe, but subsequently moved to the Axis of Absurdity.

The Theocracy of Hothistan (Defunct)

Hothistan was the first Islamic nation to reside in the Domain. Its prime mission was to prevent the Galactic powers from getting too powerful. It collapsed along with Saorstat in April 2006. It is widely believed that it was a puppet state of the Galactic Empire of Saorstat, however, this has never been substantiated.

The Empire of Tomorro (Defunct)

Tomorro was an Irish nation whose arrival either blighted the Golden Age or provided interesting discussion depending on whom you ask. A nation who wished to create a Utopia but however created a totalitiarian dictatorship over man and beast second to none. Infamous for their overreactive nature, once leaving the Domain after mis-reading a word in a post written by Saorstat.
