Ethania is the capital and largest city of the Great Land of Ethan Smith with a population of over eighteen million.

Geography and Climate

Geography

Ethania is located in the center of Ethania County. The city was founded at the confluence of the Long River and the Chachtee River making the city divided into three sections, the North Side, the West Side, and the East Side.

The East Side

The eastern part of the city is the oldest and contains the tourist attractions such as Ethania Castle and the Ethania Gardens. The city's east also houses the governmental buildings, some of which are the Presidential Palace, the Legislative Council Building, and the Supreme Court of the Great Land of Ethan Smith. The East Side is also popular among banks and residential apartments.

The West Side

The western edge of the city consists mostly of residential single-family houses, although it boasts some of the best urban parks in the world, including Ethania Park. The Ethania Boardwalk is also a major promenade in the city.

The North Side

The northern portion of the city is Ethania's commercial center and has all the skyscrapers and office buildings. The North Side, being so hilly, is also known for its Seven Hills.

Climate

Ethania has a humid subtropical climate, experiencing all four seasons. Winter is fairly cold with the lowest temperatures right around the freezing point, 32ºF (0ºC). Ethania warms up in the spring, but probably isn't the best time to visit because of the serious pollen count. Summer's highest temperatures get to around 100ºF (40ºC). The humidity can be unbearable to some people visiting, and frequent thunderstorms come straight through Ethania. Fall is probably the best time for visitors. Autumn is sunny yet dry with average temperatures at 60ºF (15ºC), and the foliage starts to change to bright red and vivid yellow in November.

History

Ethania was founded in 1429 as a small fishing village along the coast of the Gulf of Magalenia with a population topping at only 14,000 people. In 1477, a 7.3 magnitude earthquake off the northeastern coast of Ethan Smith saw many refugees coming to Ethania. This brought the population up to almost 250,000.

Ethania became an important farming area at the turn of the 16th century. Cotton thrives in the Ethania area making Ethania an important cotton exporter. Irrigation systems, canals, and dikes were built to handle the exploding cotton manufacturing. Although now, most of the water control systems are obsolete.

Pirates were a problem in Ethania during the 17th and 18th centuries. This cause Ethania to be moved inland towards the confluence of the Long River and the Chachtee River, and a wall was built to protect the city. Trade improved both domestically within the country and internationally with other nations because of this move. Ethania grew to become an economic and trading center of Ethan Smith. It became the capital of Ethan Smith in 1780.

Other foreign powers began to see Ethania as a great trading post for cotton and fishing supplies. Ethan Smith was then bombarded with a deluge of traders. The city became chaotic and disorganized and the Ethan Smith government then forced all foreigners out in 1789. The traders were infuriated with this decision. They declared war and started to take merchant ships captive. In 1822, the foreigners won, and they divided Ethania. Ethania grew to become more industrialized and more modern with new and foreign ways. Ethania was one of the first place to have electricity and a tram system. Public gardens and race tracks were built to fulfill the foreigners enjoyment. Ethania became the center of cinema and music in Ethan Smith. The Quay, a wharf built along the eastern bank of the river became Ethania's financial hub for Ethan Smith, which it still is to this day.

A fairly brief coup in 1936 caused all the foreigners out again. This rebellion caused a sort of recession in Ethania and Ethan Smith's economy. This backwardness spread throughout the country. Another coup in 1972 forced the new government out and put the old government back. Only until recently were international visitors allowed. Ever since, Ethania has seen major achievements economically and is now one of the biggest financial centers in all of Rineu.

Economy

Ethania is regarded as the center of finance and trade in all of Ethan Smith. It has the biggest GDP out of all the cities in Ethan Smith and has held that title since the 1800s. Ethania is one of the biggest ports in Ethan Smith and the region of Rineu, handling almost 450 million tons of cargo yearly. Container ships are a common sight to anyone in Ethania. And Ethania is also one of the many port of calls on major cruise ship lines. Ethania also houses the Ethan Smith Stock Exchange (ESSE) making Ethania the foremost economic center in Ethan Smith.

Ethania is also a famous architectural city. The ancient monuments and old buildings are dispersed throughout the modern high-rise apartments, which are a common sight because of this economic growth. Parks are being built left and right to improve the quality of life and also the quality of the air.

Transportation

Ethania has an expansive public transportation system with a metro system, a bus system, and taxis.

The Ethania Metro consists of five lines and tickets start at around €$0.50 and goes to around €$1.00. The taxi system is huge; almost 20,000 taxis take businesspeople, tourists, and locals alike to the Ethania area. Taxis cost begin at around €$2.00 for a few kilometers or a couple of miles. The bus system is massive, having almost five hundred lines around the city. All three of these systems, the metro, the taxi system, and the bus system are can be paid for by the EthaniCard. This card makes switching between systems easier and costs a whole lot less for the traveler and the systems themselves. Biking is also very important. Some streets do not allow cars but allow bikes to go through. The Ethania Railway Station, in the southeastern part of the city takes passengers around Ethan Smith on high-speed magnetic trains. The interstate system is important for people traveling in and out of Ethania because the subway system only goes so far. The Ethania International Airport handles five million passengers yearly, and it is the hub for airline travel in Ethan Smith and in Rineu. Towards the ocean, a deep ocean port is being built to accommodate new sea-going travelers and transoceanic shipping.
