Flag (roleplay)

A flag is a piece of cloth which is prominently displayed and used as a symbol. Flags are generally thought of as symbols of nations, provinces or other political bodies. However, flags are also frequently used in a more practical way to convey specific information or instructions. The term flag is often used to refer not only to an actual piece of cloth but to the design of a certain flag when displayed on any medium.

Flags were first used to assist in coordinating large-scale military operations before the development of easily used modern communications technology. Flags are still sometimes used in this way but most military flags, like other flags, are largely symbolic, showing pride in a particular military branch or unit. National flags are among the most potent patriotic symbols available in most nations. In federations, the flags of subnational polities can be just as potent depending on exactly how people's political identity is structured.
