Overview

Categorised as a “Libertarian Police State” by the UN, the Grand Duchy of Great Debauchery is a moderately wealthy, autocratic nation that allows extensive personal freedoms and is noted for the apparent amorality of its government and population.

Government

The country is governed by the Grand Duke himself, assisted by three anonymous High Ministers.

  • Grand Duke Jason
  • The High Minister for State Security
  • The High Minister for Culture
  • The High Minister for Miscellany
  • History

The Grand Duchy of Great Debauchery was founded by a group of disillusioned settlers from a democratic republic under the leadership of the country’s present ruler, Grand Duke Jason. Unusually, this disillusionment stemmed from excessive civil rights in the mother country, and as a result whilst allowing almost total freedom of thought and action (where the physical well-being and property of others are uninvolved), the country’s constitution also explicitly renders unlawful any attempt to curtail or criticise the exercise of these freedoms, on pain of death. The nation’s founders considered the absence of political freedom to be an acceptable price to pay to be rid of the recurring risk of oppression by the unenlightened masses, and placed their trust in the Grand Duke to uphold these principles.

Previously unaligned since its foundation, the country recently relocated to the west coast of the region of Gay, occupying an area of previously uninhabited woodland. This transition followed the controversial decision of the Grand Duke to join the UN in spite of its frequent attempts to encroach on civil liberties, a decision with led to the unfortunate massacre of several thousand dangerously misguided protestors.

    Culture

The culture of the Grand Duchy is of a somewhat hedonistic character. The government provides substantial financial and administrative support and preference to institutions that are seen to reflect the nation’s core principles, such as vineyards, breweries, distilleries, bars, clubs, casinos and brothels. The population is also highly literate, and libraries and universities are the only other cultural institutions that really flourish.

While religion and spirituality are entirely permitted, few citizens admit to regious belief. This may be because the feared Central Security Police are widely believed to treat faith organisations with automatic suspicion of opposition to civil rights, though it should be stressed that there are no actual witnesses to confirm this assumption about the CSP.

Crime is moderate, though the regular police force is careful not to suggest that this has anything to do with their total inability to infringe citizens’ extensive liberties. The Central Security Police has been more successful in its mission to eliminate dissent, largely thanks to the well-funded Institute for Cultural Re-education, where officers enlighten the foolish and ignorant through an extensive programme of drunken orgies, an ongoing process to which the Grand Duke generously and selflessly devotes much of his own time and energy.

    Economy

The country’s internal market is dominated by entertainment conglomerates such as the enormous and omnipresent DrunkenOrgyCorp, in which the government has a profitable 40% stake. Alcoholic beverages are the main export.
