Not much is known about the cause of the great nuclear conflict that came to be known as, depending on the region, Great War (Leninist Dynasty territories), World War III (Japan and) or World War Zero (United Continents Of America). However, it is known that is was a conflict between a central-european superpower called the Empire and it's allies in South America, Central Africa and Arabia versus an alliance of nuclear superpowers USA and the Russian Federation.
