The Sultanate of Gruenberg is a small nation in the Malibu Islands region. An absolute monarchy ruled from the Court at Flurthwel, the nation's capital, by the Woltzten family, the state is oppressive and controlling, though currently barely able to contain the insurrection brewing in the troubled Gelzien Nub province. The state is devoutly Wenaist.

LATEST NEWS: Gruenberg leaves UN. For the second time in under a month, UN Ambassador His Holiness Miartes Woltzten, second son of His High Holiness Grand Sultan Gardab Woltzten IV, stormed from the UN debating chamber, on this occasion citing the 'Transgender Equality Act' as 'immoral and blasphemous'. It is not believed that Gruenberg will reapply for membership.

NOTES:

  1. In order to comply with NSWiki's NPOV policy, this factbook has been assembled by a team of independent researchers. However, we cannot guarantee the validity or accuracy of any information presented in this factbook.
  2. Gruenberg adopted the metric system in The 724th Year. All public signs now display distances in metres and kilometres, and weights and measures are fixed in metric standards. However, use of antiquated tribal systems of mensuration may be encountered in more remote areas. All figures in this factbook are given in metric terms.
  3. Gruenberg has however not chosen to convert to the CE classification of dates, instead retaining Tak Perda Rarapsant (lit. The Blade Of Light in Rukialkotta), the traditional Wenaist calendar. Dates within the factbook are given in the traditional form, and as such, readers are recommended to familiarise themselves with the outline of the calendar, detailed in a separate section. Basically, however, The 1st Year equates to 1274 CE - so, for example, 1789 CE would be The 516th Year.

Ethnic Groups

Gruenberg has no major ethnic divisions, and it is important to note that Gelziens who seek autonomy do so for national and cultural, not ethnic, reasons. Differences between tribes have always been slight, and have all but disappeared now. In general, the 'average Gruenberger' is of slight-to-medium build. Fair to medium skin and dark hair are the norm.

Languages

Rukialkotta is the state language of Gruenberg and is being taken up rapidly by the population at the expense of more traditional tribal languages. Bazhtan is the holy language of the Wenaist religion, but may only be spoken by a very select minority. Figures here apply only to the first language of respondents19.

  • Rukialkotta: 62.4%
  • Salsaffron: 8.9%
  • Malhiati: 6.2%
  • Deshpatt: 5.3%
  • all other: 17%

Religion

Wenaism is the state religion of Gruenberg. Adherence is compulsory, and as such official figures routinely announce 100% observance. However, the rise of Wenaism in Gruenberg outdates the rise of the Woltzten family by hundreds of years, and the vast majority of Gruenbergers are in fact devoutly Wenaist. Tribal superstitions, although officially heretical, are usually tolerated in moderation. A firmer line has been pursued in the Gelzien Nub, where tribal beliefs prevailed long after its annexation. For further details on Wenaism, its history, and its role in Gruenberger society, readers are directed to the separate page on this matter.

GEOGRAPHY

Administrative Districts

Gruenberg is split geographically between the large Naffarron province in the west, and the smaller Gelzien Nub in the east. These are further subdivided into six major regions. Each zone has a small administrative body, including a Court-appointed governor, but federal control of policy is almost universal. The following table shows demographics for the various regions4.

The Human Development Index is a summary figure, calculated by a comparison of three basic dimensions: life expectancy, knowledge (weighted in a 2:1 ration between adult literacy rate and combined enrollment in all levels of education), and GDP per head on a PPP scale. The value lies between 0 and 1: a value above 0.8 indicates high development, and a value below 0.5 indicates low development.
