Gryffon Throne

The Gryffon Throne is the most important throne used by the Danaan Sovereign. Although every royal palace in the Resurgent Dream contains a throne, the Gwyffon Throne is the only one legally considered to be such. In the eyes of the law, the others are simply chairs owned by the Crown and used to serve the functions of thrones when he holds court away from the Royal Palace at Tarana where the Gryffon Throne is located. However, the Gryffon Throne enjoys unique protection under the law. Any person not the Sovereign of the Resurgent Dream who sits on the Gryffon Throne commits the crime of treason.

The Gryffon Throne has a number of important ceremonial functions. It is the throne in which a Danaan Sovereign sits immediately after his coronation. It is the throne from which visiting heads of state are normally received. It is also the throne from which the Speech from the Throne at the opening of any session of Parliament is read, the members of that body making the short trip to the Royal Palace for the occasion.

The Gryffon Throne was carved as part of the Marble City itself by order of High Queen Corrina and thus cannot be moved from its position in the Throne Room of the Royal Palace. It is a finely carved marble piece, the armrests of which are decorated with intricate representations of fierce but noble gryffons. It has been used in the coronations of High Queen Agwene and High King Owain.
