Halberdgardia
The Democratic Republic of Halberdgardia is a large, modern, and pleasant nation, notable for its burgeoning Halberdgardian falcon population. Its hard-nosed, intelligent population of 45 million people are fiercely patriotic and enjoy great social equality; they tend to view other, more capitalist countries as somewhat immoral and corrupt.
Geography
The geography of Halberdgardia is varied, but is roughly analogous to California, with terrain ranging from fertile flatlands to hills to mountain ranges to deserts to forests. The country enjoys a pleasant Mediterranean climate, giving it warm, dry summers, and chilly, but not terribly cold, rainy winters.
Politics
Halberdgardians are generally moderate in both politics and social issues, and enjoy a sensible mix of personal and economic freedoms. The nation sees itself as part of the modern world; its people are oriented on free and open trade, and there is a wide consensus on the advantages of the free market. The nation is run by a three-branch democratic government similar to that of the United States, but unlike the two-party system of the United States, there are a number of strong political parties vying for power. Conservative and moderate parties generally dominate the political scene.
Economy
Halberdgardia has a capitalist economy, and it is relatively strong. A large and healthy private sector is dominated by the automobile manufacturing industry. The average income tax rate is 21%, but much higher for the wealthy. The economy is mainly based on domestic industries, but does take in a fair amount of imports.
Military
Halberdgardians are peaceful, not generally seeking war, but they will give one-hundred-ten percent to support the government and military in the case of war. This wartime attitude was best demonstrated during the only war Halberdgardia has fought during its brief history: the Saharistan War. The Halberdgardian military is a relatively small but modern force, equipped with the best weaponry the country's modest defense budget can buy.
Foreign policy
Halberdgardian foreign policy has become rather conservative following the Saharistan War. The current administration is mainly concerned with domestic issues and the rebuilding of the former nation of Saharistan, as the people of Halberdgardia, though supportive of the government during the war, became disillusioned with warfare following the conflict when its costs, both human and monetary, began to make themselves felt. Most of Halberdgardia's current forays into the international arena involve voting on U.N. resolutions, supporting the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons to young nations, and participating in international research and development projects for various technologies. Halberdgardia belongs to a variety of international organizations, including the United Nations, the Directorate alliance, the Coalition of Saharistan, and the Commonwealth of Independent Nations.
