Hylaria

The Protectorate of Hylaria is an educated, left leaning state, presided over by the magnanimous and benevolent leader, High Protector James I. The main language is Hylarian, with its curious mix of romance and cyrillic grammar, its national animal is the venerable ocelot and the currency is the Xanthic Tyrune, X for short. 12 cicabi = 1 samdeta, 15 samdeti = 1 Xanthic Tyrune. Hylaria is situated in the Isles of Belleron.

Politics

The house (or Giora) of 250 wise and compassionate young people (21-35) is presided over by three Protectors of the State, the Protector of the Hearts of the Nation (PHN), the Protector or the Souls of the Nation (PSN) and the Protector of the Minds of the Nation (PMN). The PHN has responsibility for health, defense, crime and tax relating to these things. The PSN has responsibility for 'pastoral' care for the nation, things like the environment, arts and habitabiliy in and out of the cities and their roads, and tax on these things. The PMN has responsibility for education, buisness and the economy and foreign affairs (and tax on all these things). The people are taxed individually on different things such as healthcare (which is nationalised). The senate of 20 adults (25+) is chosen by the High Protector, who is chosen by the Giora from past or present Protectors of the the State. The present High Protector is James I, who was PMN 1999-2004, at which point he was promoted. The senate members can be struck off by a majority vote of 2/1 in the Giora. The senate members themselves aid the High Protector in making important policy and emergency decisions that the Lower Protectors pass up to them. All decisions made by the Giora must be approved by the senate to become legislation.

Terrain

The terrain of Hylaria is described as 'barren and inhospitable' by the unscrupulous and insensitive bestowers of nation information. This could not be further from the truth. The softly misted moors of the Hylarian Hills could not be prettier. Anyway, it is not the natural landscape of Hylaria which makes it a great nation. It is the beautiful architecture and idiosyncratically off-set roads which really prove Hylaria's excellence.

Bynesyk

The political capital and cultural hub of Hylaria is Bynesyk, a fair city indeed with its many dark blue waterways and dark-brick government buildings. Possibly the most beautiful section of Bynesyk is 'Wymsgeb Naqirnabr', or 'Yellow [more literally 'xanthic'] Prospect', the main waterway in the west-of-centre of the city. This is where many of the highest polititions live, including the Protectors. It is named after the delicate yellow flower (wymskebdakivaq) which grows near the banks. This is the flower of Bynesyk, and also a symbol of Hylaria.

Abimilu

Abimilu is the economic capital of Hylaria, and is a city of green-blue glass, with every building completely surrounded by still, blue water. These waterways are not used, but rather people travel on the raised express routes through and above the city, 'Yeqqiecr' in Hylarian. The stock market building is situated to the north of the centre of Abimilu, and is a regular hexagonal prism, with the flat hexagonal face pointing to the sky. The Bank of Hylaria is based in a building opposite to that of the stock exchange, and it is the seat of the Xanthic Tyrune, bested only in Belleron by irreputable HBH's hyuck-hyuck.

Ibakisr ymc Qaysvycaqr

The national animal of Hylaria is the ocelot, or, at least, this is the best english-language description of the ocelot-like animal that inhabits the moors of Hylaria. The Hylarian name for this creature is 'ibakis', or, colloquially, 'zqemfaq id mizekesu', 'bringer of nobility'. They stalk the upper Hylarian Hills in familial packs, searching for the flightless birds which wade through the peatier bogs. These birds are larger than your average ocelot, have dark blue-ish plumage and yellow beaks, feed off the peat and reeds which are so commonplace in the Hylarian countryside and are called 'qaysvycaqr', 'peat waders'.

Religion?

Hylaria does not have an official religion, as the vast majority of residents are actively atheistic. However, this is not to say that they are not spiritual. On the contrary, there are many groups ('cult' is a taboo word in Hylaria) which celebrate 'pagan' festivals. These groups include those concerned with heliocentric worship (this makes up 20% of the population), and also worship of the moon, the sea and the 'spirit of the moors' pbuh. Polititians are traditionally grouped by their chosen path, moon worshippers are more left-wing than heliophiles, but may belong to several or no groups of this kind. Prominant members of all groups (as listed on the spirtual groups register) meet once a year to celebrate togetherness and to discuss joint plans for important festvals. This meeting takes place in Byrska Castle, on the western coast and many revellers come to party outside. Here, the weather is always wet, but this adds to the fun and the concert that takes place from the turrets of the castle always goes down a treat.

Music

People in Hylaria have eclectic tastes in music, since music lessons are compulsory from the age of 5. Most young people like the popular strand of music, with the band 'Sayk Ibakis' being adored from Byrska to Līs. A prominant solo artist is Aty Līmrgema, whose melancholy music can jerk a tear from the eye of many a brave man. Art music (as opposed to popular music) does not feature on the younger generation's i-pods, (e-qicr em Hylareym), but does make an appearance floating down the rivers of major cities. Concert halls are frequently packed with adults who pay a great deal to listen to Higm Byfa's recent work. The national instrument of Hylaria is a trombone-like tube of metal within a slide, and there are many varieties and sizes to produce different pitches and timbres. These instruments are called 'Sqilzima's and feature prominently in Byfa's music.
