Information technology (IT) is a broad subject concerned with technology and other aspects of managing and processing information. Because of the existence of Artificial Intelligence, organic computers, scientific theories viewing the human brain as a form of computer or at least as comparable to one in many ways, and other computer technologies which many consider challenging to traditional philosophical and religious conceptions, information techology is often a very controversial subject often involving concerns other than purely technological questions.

However, leaving aside the philosophical, religious, and political issues, IT deals primarily with the use of computers to convert, store, protect, process, transmit, and retrieve information. Because of this, computer professionals are often called IT specialists and the division of an organization dealing with computer technology is often referred to simply as IT, although countless other terms also exist.
