The Glorious Republic of Leafanistan
Early History
Following the collapse of the Soviet Confederated States in Leafanistan was founded in Jan 2005 by High Father and a group of exiles who took a very large piece of land with promises to the inhabitants of massive improvements. A sort of constitutional monarchy was created with High Father being the executive office with some Legislative powers, including the ability to veto and introducing bills. A judiciary system was set up to regulate what the government did, and almost immediately, old Soviet equipment was picked up and a small military defense force was established.
General
Today Leafanistan is a huge, environmentally stunning nation, renowned for its punitive income tax rates. Its compassionate, cynical population of 954 million are ruled by a mostly-benevolent dictator, who grants the populace the freedom to live their own lives but watches carefully for anyone to slip up. Crime is relatively low, thanks to the all-pervasive police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. Leafanistan's national animal is the Hawk, which frolics freely in the nation's many lush forests. The average income tax rate is 100%. A healthy private sector is dominated by the Arms Manufacturing industry.
Geography
The original breakaway republic claimed by High Father and the exiles was an inner republic with no access to the ocean, very mountainous, today it holds many of the nation's ski resorts. It is also home to the country's massive artillery defense system for the nearby capital. Soon other former confederated states sought a stable government. High Father opened his arms to those republics and soon, Leafanistan included a large coastline, good farming plains, jungles, and a desert, renamed the Great Leafanistani Desert.
Politics
The government is similar to that of the Real Life United States of America in that it contains 3 branches, Executive, Legislative, and Judicial. However the Executive has much more influence over national policy, and can participate in the Republican Senate with the same powers as a Senator, however, the Executive reserves the right to veto. The Executive Branch is lead by lifelong leader High Father, while some express distress over him ruling for as long as he sees fit, others note that nothing that terrible has happened under his rule to warrant a new leader. Every 5 years a Senator is elected for each region, a Senatorial region is denoting by an area having a concentration of at least 10 million people. Currently there are 4 major parties: The Fascist Leafanistani Party, the Democratic Republican Party, the Federalist Party, and the People's Party. Leafanistani Politics tend to be very moderate with most of the focus on helping ourselves.
Economy
Currently the Arms Manufacturing Industry is the strongest, followed by Woodchip exports and Information Technology. The semi-state controlled industries work to serve the people and make profit via international sales. Leafanistan is a firm believer in self-sufficieny and has the ability to make all the raw materials it needs if cut off entirely from the international community.
Military
Leafanistan's primary concern is defense. Probably an outgrowth of the country's general paranoia and cynicism about the outside world. Starting from age 4 all children are sent to the "Academy" where they recieve the equivalent of education from Kindergarden, to a 2-year college by the time they are 16. They also recieve combat training equivalent to that of a marine starting from scratch at age 21. The children then have a choice of returning for a full education and serving the people and the nation economically, or staying in the military for 9-month tours. Soldiers are usually nearly 2 meters in height and have strong bones and muscles. Trained since they were young to resist psychological warfare they are loyal as they are strong. They can operate nearly any weapon and maintain nearly any standard vehicle. They are strong, loyal, and highly intelligent.
Foreign Affairs
Leafanistan is outwardly distrustful of the outside world tending to make condemnations and praise rather than directly helping. Unless it serves the people's interest Leafanistan avoids it. However recently following the Saharistan War the people have taken a greater interest in foreign affairs including helping in the Montignac Civil War.
