Leningrad, formerly known as Saint Petersburg and Petrograd, is the Soviet Union's second largest city with over 9 million inhabitants. It served as the capital of the Russian Empire until 1917, the Russian Republic until the December of the same year, and now remains a major economic centre for the country, including large shipyards and other industries that are some of the nation's largest. It has been serving as the summer headquarters of the European Union Security Council and it has its own sports club, Zenit Leningrad, which is famous throughout the country as a football (soccer), hockey and basketball club that has won many titles over rivals (especially CSKA Moscow and Dynamo Kyiv.)
