Martinique
Nation: Sicinia Salis
Function: Trade & Ship-building
Population: 998,000
Leader: Admiral Jean Francois de la Martinique

The largest city in Sicinia Salis, Martinique has always thrived off of commerce. To the people who lived in the area before the Akaeian Empire, the city was named Menarates. In Akaeian times it was Marteleus, and even at that point in history it made a living as the main port in the area.

During the area of The City Kings Martinique was one of the most powerful. It vied for commercial power with Chanaud and military power with Saint Michele However, in the late 1200s its was decaying from within. The city was gripped by a feud between the two leading families: The rich Montenards and the noble d'Solier. The feud escalated to the point that battles took place daily in the streets. Seeking an end to the violence, in 1468 C.E. the Montenards invited Saint Michele into the city. Robert, the Priest King who was nurturing his dream of a unified Sicinia, saw his chance and agreed. He killed or exiled the d'Soliers and put the Montenards in local power. The family continued to rule until the early 1500s, when a disagreement with the king saw them thrown from power and replaced by the king's cousin, hence the Duchy.

Today, thanks mainly to the presence of the Guild of Saint Christopher, it has maintained that dominance. There are more than a dozen shipyards in Martinique, building warships and merchantmen for both Sicinia and for other nations. It is here that the Sicinian navy is based, with a squadron of seven warships constantly in harbor, as well as the home port of the 4th Fleet.

It is said that only a Sicinian could love Martinique, and it is true that the city does take some getting used to. Sewer mains were installed in the city, but to get there the filth has to run along a street gutter before reaching a grill. This is the case in most Sicinian cities, but with almost 500,000 people and no river to wash into, the smell becomes often unbearable, especially during the summer. Although there are many fine buildings and squares, both public and private, the Duchy has taken no effort towards beautifying the city, allowing developers to do with it what they please. Martinique is certainly a city, in every sense of the word.
