Michael J. Smith was born just before the First Age of Nanakaland [RL Time: March-June 2003], a refugee of a people without a homeland. He was born of an elven mother and a human father, thus becoming half immortal. At the age of 5, his mother left, leaving Michael with only his father. He was so poor that he barely was able to go to college, even with a scholarship.
When Nanakaland was reestablished, he joined the army and helped fight for the new People's Republic of Nanakaland. He became a war hero and then became President of Nanakaland in a landslide election. He was the second President, but he was the most important by far.
