The National University of Kerla is the biggest university in Kerla. There are more then eighty campuses all around the country. The university is the only university to survive the rebellion. There are more then 500,000 students. It is more like a university system, then an university.

History

The National University of Kerla was set to further educate the minds of young Kerlans. When the NUK was set up during the first republic. The leaders decided they needed a way to educate and train young Kerlans. The first NUK was in what is now known as Abbott. The university was chartered as the National University of Kerla in 1963. The first year the student population was 52 students. The university was first established in West Abbott. However space was very limited in West Abbott due to rapid urbanization of the area. The Board of Trustees decided to expand into East Abbott. East Abbott is the biggest campus.

Governance

The governance of NUK, like the country is very unique. The university is governed by the Board of Trustees, in which the president is also the head of the university. Each campus is led by a provost, in which he or she reports to the president.

Board of Trustees

The Board of Trustees consists of nine members, in whom three are appointed by the Supreme Executive Council, one is appointed by the Speaker of the National Assembly, one is appointed by the Minority Leader of the National Assembly and one is elected by the National Assembly and the other three are appointed by the Education Directorate. Trustees serve nine years. They appoint the president and the senior executives. They also create the mission statement and objectives of the university.

President

The president is the chief executive of the university. He or she also has executive powers and are head of the university. He or she manages all the provosts. The president is the chief executive of the university. The president also appoints all the officers and provost of the university. The president runs the day to day operations of the entire university.

Executive Provost

The president also appoints an Executive Provost, who oversees all the other provosts. The Executive Provost is the chief academic officer of the NUK, and thus oversees the academic aspect of the whole university.

Provosts

Provosts are the head of their respective campus. The provost appoint the deans of the campus. The provost is the chief executive officer at their respective campus. Provosts run the day-to-day operations of their campus.
