The Canton of Neu Schleswig is dominated by its German population, most of which descends from Schleswig-Holstein immigrants. In the early twentieth century, poor conditions in the aforementioned German province caused a mass exodus from the city of Kiel and its suburbs. Nearly all Neu Schleswigers can trace their genealogy back to members of that exodus.
In the November election, the DLP liberals almost had a sweep in Neu Schleswig, but the DFU managed one congressional seat from the canton.
