Led by Nikolai Zukov, Novaya Zemlaya broke away from Russia after the rise of the Lehaim regime. The island nation remained peacefull until rivalry with Prussiatopia heightened to a state of war. The conflict, known as the "Second Boreal War" involved a minor nuclear exchange between the two powers and a full scale invasion of Novaya Zemlaya's northern island (Severny). The city of Chelyabinsk was destroyed by a Prussiatopian ICBM, the Zemlayan counter attack levelled the city of Ipu Heights (former Upian capital city). Nikolai Zukov was killed in action alongside resistance fighters (Severny Partisans) during the siege of Permaskaya and was succeeded by General Vladimir Leonov.
