Geography

The archipelago of Novaya Zemlaya (Russian:Но́вая Земля́,"New Land") consists of two major islands in the Arctic Ocean separated by the narrow Matochkin strait, and a number of smaller ones. The two main islands are Severny (northern) with it's capital at Permaskaya, and Yuzhny (southern) with the national capital at Odessa. Novaya Zemlaya separates the Barents Sea from the Kara Sea. The area is very mountainous, as geologically Novaya Zemlaya is the continuation of the Ural Mountains. It is separated from the Russian mainland by the Kara Strait. The mountains reach a height of 1070 meters. The northern island contains many glaciers and experiences a tundra climate, while the southern one is more temperate and supports large areas of taiga (boreal forest). Natural resources include uranium, gold , copper and lead.

People

Novaya Zemlaya is home to a growing population of over 2 billion at last census, concentrated mainly in Yuzhny. Most are ethnic Russians, although foreigners are welcomed with open arms. Severny is also home to a strong population (between 2 and 3 thousand) of indigenous Nenetses. Citizens enjoy great social equality, are fervently patriotic, and loyal to the administration.

History

Led by Nikolai Zukov, Novaya Zemlaya broke away from Russia after the rise of the Lehaim regime. The island nation remained peacefull until rivalry with Prussiatopia heightened to a state of war. The conflict, known as the "Second Boreal War" involved a minor nuclear exchange between the two powers and a full scale invasion of Novaya Zemlaya's northern island (Severny). The city of Chelyabinsk was destroyed by a Prussiatopian ICBM, the Zemlayan counter attack levelled the city of Ipu Heights (former Upian capital city). Nikolai Zukov was killed in action alongside resistance fighters (Severny Partisans) during the siege of Permaskaya and was succeeded by General Vladimir Leonov. Leonov fought Prussiatopian forces to a standstill close to the city of Severnograd, the "the Northern Gate". The invasion was effectively repulsed, but the damage was great. Today Leonov is attempting to steer Novaya Zemlaya out of economic decline and build a permanent peace with Prussiatopia.
