Geography

The archipelago of Novaya Zemlaya (Russian:Но́вая Земля́,"New Land") consists of two major islands in the Arctic Ocean separated by the narrow Matochkin strait, and a number of smaller ones. The two main islands are Severny (northern) and Yuzhny (southern). Novaya Zemlaya separates the Barents Sea from the Kara Sea. The area is very mountainous, as geologically Novaya Zemlaya is the continuation of the Ural Mountains. It is separated from the Russian mainland by the Kara Strait. The mountains reach a height of 1070 meters. The northern island contains many glaciers and experiences a tundra climate, while the southern one is more temperate and supports large areas of taiga (boreal forest). Natural resources include uranium, gold , copper and lead.

People

Novaya Zemlaya is home to a growing population of over a billion at last census, concentrated mainly in Yuzhny. Most are ethnic Russians, although foreigners are welcomed with open arms. Severny is also home to a strong population (between 2 and 3 thousand) of indigenous Nenetses. Citizens enjoy great social equality, are fervently patriotic, and loyal to the administration.

History

Led by Nikolai Zhukov, Novaya Zemlaya broke away from Russia after the rise of the Lehaim regime, and has prospered under his leadership ever since. Although often labelled a dictator by outsiders, none can deny his policies are generally benevolent. Soon after independance Novaya Zemlaya began to build friendly relationships with neighbouring states, and became the UN delegate representing "The Arctic". Contact with the Polar Union in the "Arctic" region grew rapidly into strong alliance. Today the P.U. continues to expand, and Novaya Zemlaya remains a prominent and committed member among it's ranks.

The nation often tries to act as a peacemaker in regional conflicts. Severnaya Zemlaya, another autonomous arctic archipelago, is a protectorate.
