The Populace

The people of Polska & BaltoSlavia are purely Slavic; they are the sons and daughters of Eastern Europe and the steppes beyond. They are fiercely conservative in defense of ethics and morality due to their infallible alliegeance to the Roman Catholic Church, which exercises its power over the nation. On political and economic issues they tend to be more liberal as they are willing to find new ways to get rich. Several vast cities dot the nation, each distinguishable by their towering cathedrals. These metropolises are kept very clean, but in the mostly industrialized rural areas the toxicity of the air reaches unhealthy levels. 57% of the population consists of Poles, who are treated with dignity and have the most political freedoms granted by the Polish-run government. Two large minorities are the Slavics (25%) and Baltics (17%). These two minorities have less civil rights and political freedoms and work in the grimy factories of the industrial sectors.

Geography

Very little remains of the vast, dense forests that covered the nation in its infancy. Most of the land has been either covered by cities or cultivated, then later industrialized. A handful of farms have been spared as they are essentiel in producing the national beverage, straight vodka. The Carpathian mountains stretch across the nation's middle and are the source of the four major rivers that flow into the Southern Ocean of Menotomy. The largest river Vistula empties into Menotomy's Southern Ocean at the sprawling port city of Warzkiewapest. As the nation's largest city Warzkiewapest serves as the national capitol.

Government

The Holy Council

The government of the empire is watched over by the Archpontiff's Holy Council of Cardinals. The Catholic Church closely monitors and regulates all government activity in order to preserve the ethics and morals taught by the Church. The Archpontiff heads the Holy Council and has unconditional veto power over any bills or actions passed by the legislature; his vetoes cannot be overridden. The Archpontiff's term last as long as he is alive or until he resigns for any just reason. The current ArchPontiff is Zacharyk Pierogszki IV who has brought recent changes by granting more freedoms to Baltic and Slavic provinces with good behavior.

The Three Senates

The ultimate authority that is the Holy Council presides over a democracy ruled by a tricameral legislature. The government consists of three senates: two lower, one upper. Bills passed in the lower senates are then forwarded to the upper senate for approval. Each senate represents the empire's three primary regions.

The Polish Senate

Provinces Represented: Poland and Kaliningrad (but has authority over all provinces in the empire). Roles: 1. Passes or repeals bills into/out of law brought forth by representatives of Poland. 2. Approves or rejects bills that have been passed by either of the lower senates. 3. May exercise legislative authority over any provinces represented in the lower senates that have failed to comply with government demands. 4. Directs the actions of the military. Can declare war with approval of the archpontiff. 5. Acts as head of the judiciary system and presides over cases, both civil and criminal, that are upgraded from any lower courts in the empire.

The Baltic Senate

Provinces Represented: Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Belarus, and St. Petersburg sector Russia. Roles: 1. Passes/Repeals bills brought forth by representatives of the Baltic provinces. 2. Acts as the highest judiciary court presiding over all courts in the region. 3. May cooperate with Slavic Senate in joint legislature, passing/repealing bills that would affect both regions.

The Slavic Senate

Provinces Represented: Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Bosnia/Herzegovina, Yugoslavia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Romania, Slovenia, Moldavia, Ukraine, and Moskva-Volgograd Sector Russia. Roles: 1. Passes/Repeals bills brought forth by representatives of the Baltic provinces. 2. Acts as the highest judiciary court presiding over all courts in the region. 3. May cooperate with Slavic Senate in joint legislature, passing/repealing bills that would affect both regions.

History

The Barbarians

The peoples of Polska-BaltoSlavia originated from the steppes of what is now north-eastern Cruhad. When the Arabs formed the nation of Cruhad, these northeast barbarian tribes were exiled into the heavily forested wilderness of the former civilization of Debiana. The tribes of Poles, Balts, and Slavs settled in this territory and formed individual city-states. Eventually Christian missionaries arrived to convert the barbarians and were successful. The now civilized tribes practiced either Roman Catholic or Orthodox Christianity, with little tensions as of yet.

The PslOavLobSalKtiAc Wars

The rapidly expanding city-states of the Debian frontier formed alliances and consolidated into three independent republics: The Sacred Orthodox Republic of the Baltics, the Divine Cathrodox Republic of Slavia, and the Holy Catholic Republic of Polska. Border disputes and ethnic tensions continued to escalate beyond the containment of diplomacy, and full-scale war erupted. 44 years of bloodshed and destruction ended in a total victory by Polish forces at the battle of Minsk where the armies of the BaltoSlavic Axis surrendered to the might Polish Cavalry Corps. The Baltics and Slavia were annexed by Polska to form the Holy Catholic Empire of Polska and BaltoSlavia. The subordinate Balts and Slavs were stripped of many of their civil and political freedoms while the victorious Poles were granted extensive rights to government and corporate offices. Practice of Orthodox Christianity was not banned, but was greatly discouraged by the Catholic government through means of human rights confiscations.

The Numa-Numa Rebellion

Due to the efficiency of government oppression, very few revolts have occurred since the consolidation of the empire. An exception to this was the Numa-Numa Riot that occurred in the Province of Romania. The event is described in the following news article: -WARZKIEWAPESZT SUNDAY GAZETTSKI- A large revolt was put down last Saturday outside of the capitol building. A large group of Romanian protesters were either shot or arrested after rioting over a heated political issue. The debate began the week before when representatives in the Romanian House of Representatives, located in the Slavic Senate. As many as 14 million people, the people of the Romanian sector located in the Southeast part of Polska-BaltoSlavia, were rabidly requesting a massive change to the nation's identity. Led by a rather hefty, bespectacled man named Vlad Florescu, who presented a music video he called the Numa-Numa Dance, taken from a song by the Romanian pop group O-zone. It was requested to Romanian delegates that this song be the new national anthem, replacing the Dabrowski Mazurka. The proposal was presented to the Slavic Senate, which also included provinces such as Yugoslavia, Slovakia, and Croatia. By a vote of 72-28 the bill passed and was moved up to the Polish Senate, which had higher authority over the Baltic and Slavic Senates. The bill was immediately rejected by the nationalistic Polaks, calling it "travesty that make ears spewing blood." In response, a group of 5,000 Romanian nationalists gathered in front of the capitol and staged a revolt. The 107th and 85th Marine divisions were called in the round them up. A massive riot ensued. Before they surrendered, about 2,900 of the Romanian were killed and 142 marine casualties. Their bodies were delivered to Bucharest and thrown onto the steps of the provincial capitol where they still rot. The entire province of Romania is now banned from all exposure to non-government broadcasted media. --Janek Przyszki, Gazettski Staff
