History of Roania

Roanian History can be split in several parts:

  1. Before the First Empire
  2. The First Empire
  3. Internecine Warfare
  4. Republic
  5. Second Internecine Period
  6. Principlality Rule
  7. Second Empire (Imperium)

First Empire

The Divine Imperium of Roania and the Sunset Isles was founded in the late 16th and early 17th centuries by Muscovite adventurers under the command of Ivan Drakharn. On the wrong side of a powerstruggle in the Grand Duchy, and supplemented by people fleeing from Novgorod and chaos back home, they crossed the channel between Siberia and Novar Ohan and founded what was then known as the Eastern Ruthenian Kingdom (in modern Agua). Later, more sparsely populated 'countries' formed on the rest of the island continent.

The ERK remained in isolation until the 18th century, when more Russian, joined by a large Franco-Spanish colonising fleet (in reality escaped mutineers and prisoners who had joined together to take control of a navy) arrived. Thus reinforced (after several wars of consolidation), the first Novaranian Empire was created by a 'Basil Drakharn', in reality Charles Dauphan, who later married a real descendant of Ivan in order to cement his claim to leadership.

While not much is remembered of this figure, what is known is that he was a strict moderniser. Devoutly Catholic, it was he who first founded the Order of Saint Michael, with the intention of making it clear to everyone that the Orthodox Religion would not be tolerated. With the creation of a Patriarchate by Rome, the Empire retreated from history until 1865.

Civil War

On July 17 1865, the childless Emperor Basil Drakharn III was on his deathbed. Around him, the major nobles waited for the name of their new leader. Patriarch Zeus II stood quietly over the deathbed, leaned down, and whispered, "To whom do you leave the Empire?"

Basil's answer has gone down in the history books as the world's dumbest ever governmental decision: "To the Strongest."

Five days later the entire Empire schismed into an orgy of violence, death, and destruction as each of the major factional and territorial lords threw themselves at each other in a violent civil war.

At the end of the first year, the feuding territories and their leaders were:

  • The Most Holy Principality of Roania
    • Prince Aleksandr Ruslanevich Chyornyev
  • The Serene Archduchy of Arquis
    • Archduke Pierre d'Arquis
  • The Republic of Agua
    • Chief Ruling Officer Rasputin Machyavelli (Ivan Dolshenko)
  • The County of Altaioc
    • Boyar Jacob Kalinsky
  • The Duchy of Altara
    • Duke Ruslan Sorzi

The Civil Wars were a dark time for Novar Ohan. The northern plains, where Altaioc and Altara sit, were completely depopulated in Ruslan's conquest, and even then an anarchist assassin destroyed him and his entire family, sending the territory into internecine conflict and collapse that it still hasn't recovered from.

Eventually, the republic of Agua defeated its enemies. The d'Arquis and Chyornyev families
