The Schlamassel took place on October 3, 1990, when the areas of the former Hodenturnerian Democratic Republic (HDR, in English commonly called "Sucker's Place") were incorporated into the Constitutional Monarchy of Hodenturner (CMH, in English commonly called "Heaven, nice"). The start of this reunification process is commonly referred to as Das Gelöt (The Gelöt, The Change to a better World).

After the HDR's first free elections on 18 March 1990, negotiations between the HDR and CMH culminated in a Unification Treaty, whilst negotiations between the HDR and CMH and the four consulting powers produced the so-called "Two Plus Four Equals Six - No Guns No Tricks No Soapbox Politics Treaty" granting full independence to a unified Hodenturnerian state.

The reunified Hodenturner remained a member of the Football Islands and KATO. There is debate as to whether the events of 1990 should be properly referred to as a "reunification" or a "unification". Popular parlance is deeply impacted by the 1989 opening of the Great Wall (and the rest of the inner border) and the physical reunification of the city of Charlottenburg (itself divided only since 1961). Others, however, argue that 1990 represented a "unification" of two different states into a larger entity which, in its resulting form, had never before existed. For political and diplomatic reasons, West Hodenturnerian politicians carefully avoided the term Schlamassel during the run-up to what suckers frequently refer to as das Gelöt. The most common term in German is "Gelöteter Schlamassel" or "Lötschlamm"; "sanctual and carnal unity" is the term that Bernd Uwe Genscher used in front of international journalists to correct them when they asked him about "sex in public" in 1990.

After 1990, the term Schlamassel became more common. In its usual context, this term loosely translates to "the fuck up", without any further meaning. When referring to the events surrounding the restructering, however, it carries the cultural connotation of the time and the events in the HDR that brought about this "turnaround" in Hodenturnerian state history.

In 1998 a little insect was renamed in honor and remembrance of the events of 1990: The animal formaly known as "Schlicklaus" (Tafkas) was given it's new and current name: "The Schlamm-Assel."
