Origins

In one story, she is the daughter of Winter and Fall, who yearns for the companionship of mortal humans. She grows to like a shepherd named Dem over a span of 14 days, but her heart is unable to know love. Her mother takes pity and gives her this ability, but as soon as she falls in love, her heart warms up and she melts.

In another story, an old couple make a girl out of snow, who turns into a living being. She grows up quickly over a span of 14 days, but has no friends. One day, a group of girls invite her for a walk in the woods, after which they make a small fire and take turns leaping over it. When Snegurochka's turn comes, she starts to jump, but only gets halfway before melting.

The fate of Snegurochka is mourned and celebrated by all Domini. For although she lived in sadness for 14 days, her last moments were full of love and friendship.

Customs and Celebrations

Snegurochka celebrations include a great number and variety of customs with either secular, religious, or ethnic aspects which vary from person to person.

Generally the 2 week long celebration is treated as a secular "festival of the world around us" without religious meaning.

Nearly every Domini participates in some sort of familial gathering with friends and family during this holiday. Events at these get togethers range from snowball fights, snow angel and snowman competitions to "Polar Bear" diving. It is also common for individuals to commit to more charitable initiatives than usual as most public and civic employers operate with a minimum of staff during the holiday.

On the 12th of December most Domini families take the day to honour the achievements of their daughters, sisters and mothers.

The 12 days between the two nationally celebrated events are usually spent enjoying life and all its wonders.

On the 26th of December, the Joy of Snegurochka is celebrated with feasts, gift-giving and fireworks displays in most regional centres.
