Scented, 2 cm across, 8 creamy petal like segments

Plumed 1-seeded achemes in cup-shaped receptacle about 1 cm across

Wood:
|
Sapwood pale; heartwood from pale grey to light brown to black; density about 500 kg per cubic metre; “blackheart” sassafras much prized in furniture.
