Southern Sassafras

Scientific Name:

Atherosperma moschatum
Family: Monimiaceae
Height: 10-15 m, occasionally to 25 m
Bark: Light brown to light grey, often covered in varicoloured lichen, aromatic
Adult leaves: Opposite, lanceolate, sparsely toothed, 3-5 cm long, shiny yellow-green on upper side, pale grey-green on under side, nutmeg fragrance
Flowers: Scented, 2 cm across, 8 creamy petal like segments
Fruit: Plumed 1-seeded achemes in cup-shaped receptacle about 1 cm across
Wood: Sapwood pale; heartwood from pale grey to light brown to black; density about 500 kg per cubic metre; “blackheart” sassafras much prized in furniture.
Nation: Errinundera
