Submunitions

Submuntions are, as the name implies, weapons or weapons systems or combat related equipment which are carried into the combat theatre or to the target by other munitions. The storage area for submunitions on such a device - such as an Iluvauromeni 'combat Hornet' - is referred to as a 'warbay'. Devices which carry submunitions are not referred to as kill vehicles, as they do not carry a warhead.

Offensive submunitions are, in the space theatre, commonly such weapons as one-shot particle-cannon platforms, kinetic bullets, high-energy electronic warfare systems, or low-yield low-velocity kinetic missiles.

Defensive submunitions are often specially developed interdiction devices such as point-defence systems - for example PDLs (point-defence lasers), the PDEFS (point defence electron flux system), or kinetic bullet swarms. Equally often, electronic warfare systems are integrated into the submunitions which deliver these functions.
