‘’Hawkins’’ is one of the five constituent cantons of the ‘’’Confederated City States of Mikitivity’’’. It is the only unilingually English canton in the confederation.

English people settled early and stayed, preserving their minority culture in a German majority.

Culture

This canton has an unusually large number of public holidays, but it should be noted only the confederal and a few of the cantonal ones actually guarantee employees a paid day without working. The following holidays are observed:

• spring – Easter (Cantonal), a special deathday
• May – Memorial Day (Cantonal), to remember what you did last summer
• July 4 – Canton Day (Cantonal), to celebrate Chinese culture and cuisine
• July 24 -- Democracy Union Day (Confederal), to show solidarity free labor unions and with the International Democratic Union
• September -- Labor Day (Cantonal), to honor mothers who have given birth
• October 31 -- All Hallows Eve (Confederal), to celebrate the illustrious Hallow family
• November -- Thanksgiving (Cantonal), preceded by Almstaking
• November 11 – Remembrance Day (Cantonal), to remember what winter was like
• November 15 -- Sadie Hawkins Day (Cantonal), honoring a founding mother who was one of the first Appalachian settlers to the region.
• December 24 and 25 -- Christmas (Cantonal), a special birthday

Cantonal Forces

Because Hawkins only English as its sole official language, all German parallel titles are unofficial and represented by a tilde (~). However, these informal titles are widely known and accepts by the Confederal Forces and throughout the remaining four cantons where German is spoken.

Armoured Branch ~ Panzertruppenabteilung, responsible for all mechanized troops raises a few Tank Regiments ~ Panzerregiments, Armored Car Regiments ~ Panzerkraftwagen and Armored Personnel Carrier Regiments ~ Schützenpanzerregiments ~ Panzergrenadierregiments.

The Light Infantry Branch ~ Jägerabteilung raises some rifle regiments ~ Jägerregiments, whose private soldiers are called Sharpshooters – a title in use nowhere else in the country. The name preserves the memory of Mr. Christian (!) Sharps’ .52-caliber carbine popular around the time of the American Civil War.

Officially part of the Light Infantry Branch are a small number of Ranger Regiments, a strange (to germanophone residents of Mikitivity) amalgam of airborne, mountaineering, urban assault and reconnaissance troops. There is no agreed upon German equivalent, most of the likely candidates having unsavory associations with Nationalsozialische Deutche Arbeiterpartei:

• “Kommandos” – Boer irregulars who rarely had uniforms, and the infamous Commando order in 1940 when Adolf Hitler ordered uniformed soldiers in the British Army and Royal Marine Commandos to be shot contrary to the Geneva Conventions as so-called gangsters.
• “Sonderinfanterie” – Sonderkommandos, mobile killing battalions which operated in Eastern Europe before the Shoah or Holocaust had fully operational death camps for Jews and other so-called undesirables.
• “Sturmtruppen” - Ernst Röhm’s Sturmabteilungen, the dreaded Brown Shirts who were the NSDAP militia until the leadership was killed by the Schutzstaffel.
• ”Rangers” – A straight loanword but with far too many incongruously non-threatening associations with Yogi Bear, Ranger Rick, Smoky the Bear, not to mention British footballers. Well, maybe the last association strikes the right amount of fear into listeners’ hearts.

The Mountaineering Branch ~ Gebirgstruppenabteilung raise Mountain Regiments whose private soldiers are called Mountaineers ~ Gebirgsjägers. Given the confusion with park rangers and mountain rangers, this just confuses germanophones further.

Another minor quirk is the official names in the Artillery Branch ~ Artillerieabteilung: units considered part of the Air Defence Artillery = Flugabwehrartillerie elsewhere are called Anti-Aircraft Artillery. Regardless of their type, artillery privates are known as Gunners ~ Kanoniers, lance corporals as lance bombardiers ~ Kanonegefreiters and corporals as bombardiers ~ Kanoneobergefreiters.Cateogry:Provinces
