What is the ESUS?

The ESUS is a large and active space alliance, with approximately forty-eight nations representing over sixty-seven billion people from across the galaxy and beyond. The diverse nature of the ESUS is apparent in it's completely nondiscriminatory admission of members with governments ranging from xenocidal dictators to communist pseudo-utopias. Despite the claims of its detractors, the ESUS itself is not imperialist. It is primarily a mutual trade and defense pact, but over time a close-knit community has formed, with highly active alliance forums.

Alliance policy is currently directed by two Senior Directors, The Mindset and Central Facehuggeria, after the sudden departure of Blademasters and Indra Prime from the NS community. The current Senior Directors were elected by popular vote, unlike the original two, and will serve until retirement. The ESUS Forums are maintained by The Mindset and hosted on Digital Crocus servers.

Our Aims

We wish to establish an interstellar trading network, benefiting the economies of all our members. Trade of technology and resources, and mutual defence agreements shall allow us to grow and expand, while maintaining our original intentions: to allow members to prosper in a stable environment.

Brief History

Shortly after the fall of the Galactic Alliance, The Infinite Empire of The Mindset (then a republic) unleashed a draft of a constitution destined for greatness. The original incarnation of the ESUS reached fifteen members, including Indra Prime and Klonor before dying due to inactivity. Some short months later, the nation of Indra Prime ressurected and restored the ESUS constitution, and the Restored ESUS was born. Under the combined leadership of The Mindset and Indra Prime, who became Senior Directors, the ESUS grew swiftly to become what it is today. The ESUS constitution is available on the ESUS website, and can be read at the end of this article.

Beginnings

At first, the leaders of the ESUS knew that they must raise the profile of the alliance in order to avoid it stagnating as it had done so before. Indra Prime was already at war with the Shivan hordes threatening galactic peace, as was CorpSac. Under the banner of the ESUS, a long, bloody and victorious war was waged against them. During the course of the war, ESUS ships pushed back a Shivan incursion fleet. In their desperation, the Shivans developed a strain of sentient nanite designed to stem the tide of the ESUS advance. But the Shivan plan backfired when the nanites grew beyond their constraints and flooded the Shivan subspace realm, forcing them to abandon it.

The First Shivan War

Concerned by the rising threat posed by the genocidal transdimentional aliens known as Shivans, the ESUS set about developing many new technologies to counter the much more advanced shielding and FTL drives which the enemy possessed. With much new research and funding being diverted to military projects, the ESUS quickly developed from a primarily trading alliance to a focusing much more on the mutual defense clauses of the constitution. Shortly before war broke out, many ESUS nations designed and deployed much swifter and stronger ships, with weapons designed specially to counteract the nulling effects of Shivan shielding systems. The Mindset sought to replicate the success of Kanuckistani Battleplate, and so designed a highly armoured ship designated the Battleforge. More recently, the systems have been upgraded in anticipation of war with the Galactic Empire to the Mk II. Initial fears came to realisation as the Shivans attacked Normandeicht, a Germanische Zustande system. Though Germanische Zustande was not a member of the ESUS, many ESUS members came to his aid, seeking to eliminate the threat Shivans posed to the entire galaxy. After a lengthy battle involving many nations from at least three alliances, the Shivans were eventally pushed back and forced to give territory to the combined fleets of Germanische Zustande, Gronde and several ESUS members. However, tensions caused by the conflicting egos of many empires created an unstable enviroment. For now, the Shivans had retreated into their Subspace domain, where their Worldships would easily be able to defend their territory from all but the most formidable combined fleet.

The Cold Wars

So began a brief, yet tension-filled Cold War, with the nation of Germanische Zustande and Gronde's Alliance of Naggorath. With no side willing to fully commit themselves to an offensive war against another, the war decended into a battle of words and political maneuvering. With the contruction of an AoN military base in the Sargon system, the ESUS began to worry that they were slowly being encircled by enemies.

The Second Shivan War

Peace, however unsteady, did not last long. Shortly after the failure of their primary assault on this dimention, the Shivans once again all-out assaulted the Milky Way, This time bringing several Worldships. With the destruction of Subspace by sentient nanites, the Shivans were forced to relocate their entire civilisation to the Yarin system, the forces of the ESUS flooded the system with FTLi, preventing their movement outwards. (OOC note: I believe this confrontation ended in an ignore due to godmodding, perhaps from both sides. So, as a matter of continuity, we'll just say for now that they're still stuck in that system under the barrier of FTLi.)

Breach of Trust

The ESUS has undergone two breaches of trust, with a member leaking inside OOC information onto the NS boards. The thread detailing the musings of an attack upon the Triumvirate of Yut was particularly embarressing. Needless to say, the thread was more talk than ever considering action. The second leak, relating to the possible war between the ESUS and the Galactic Empire, was already being organised OOCly between both alliances, and so the leak was fairly pointless. Regardless, the ESUS forum account of Black Corsairs, a puppet of Unified Sith, was identified by close examination of server logs as the leaker, and subsequently banned. The war with the GE has since fallen through due to several unresolved disputes, including, but not limited to the implication of GE leadership in the leaks.

The Civil War

The ESUS is currently involved in an ongoing civil war. See main article at ESUS Civil War.

ESUS Technology

The ESUS's technology is as diverse as its members, with a dedicated public forum category designed to showcase the various publicly available information regarding ships and technologies of ESUS members. It can be viewed here.

ESUS Constitution

Section I - Basic Agreements

  • Member nations agree to abide by ESUS alliance laws and mandates, on punishment of ejection and trade sanctions.
  • All member states agree never to infringe upon the sovereignty of other ESUS alliance members, nor shall the ESUS alliance impose upon the sovereignty of member nations.
  • Forced use of member nation space without prior consent of the owner will result in a warning, and if further violations take place, ejection from ESUS.
  • Forced use of ESUS member space by non-alliance members will result in a state of war being declared.
  • ESUS members must remain active within the alliance. Deceased/inactive nations will be removed from the alliance.

Section II - Laws

  • In the occurrence of a conflict between member nation sovereign laws and ESUS alliance laws, negotiations shall be opened within a neutral party's space, and compromises reached.
  • All member nations shall enact laws if voted upon and passed by a minimum of 80% majority.
  • All member nations may use the stellar space of other member nations for trade and/or peaceful operations, if doing so does not affect local business.
  • Use of member space for military use by alliance members, not directed at other alliance members, is permitted so long as action is sanctioned by ESUS vote.
  • Use of non-ESUS member space for military purposes is at the discretion of the owner.
  • Use of ESUS space for military activities not related to ESUS is at the discretion of the owner.

Section III - Military Action

  • Upon military action against a member state by foreign aggressors, all member nations must donate aid in the form of either food, financial aid or military aid.
  • There is no set limit for the amount of aid given, but aid must be given or face ejection from ESUS.
  • If military action against a member state is considered to be unfair and/or a godmod, the entire ESUS alliance will enact a state of ignore on the said godmodders.
  • In line with the ESUS alliance not interfering with individual nation's sovereignty, the alliance constitution does not prohibit declarations of war by any member state, so long as it is not against another member.
  • If such a war takes place, then other ESUS members are exempt from Section III, section A. Aid may still be given, but at the discretion of individual members.
  • No member of the ESUS alliance may declare war upon another member unless said action has been passed by a majority vote.
  • ESUS members may petition for aid, and hence petition for ESUS sanctionship of any war involving ESUS members. (Petition refers to gaining the support of three or more ESUS nations.)

Section IV - Trade

  • All trade barriers between member worlds shall be eliminated, bringing greater profit and greater quantities of goods.
  • ESUS is declared as being economically neutral. This is neither a Communist nor Socialist alliance, no more than a Capitalist alliance. The laws of ESUS trade are to ease relations, as well as benefit the economies of all member nations.
  • Trade of technology is encouraged between member nations. This will allow greater seamless integration of troops during times of war.
  • Resources are encouraged to be shared. This will in turn promote trade and ease relations.

Section V - Member State Rights

  • Any member may propose a change to the constitution, where it will be voted upon by member states, and if passed, added.
