The Commonwealth of Tribus Sarmatae has its origins in a series of Socialist revolutions in very close proximity together - the fledgling governments felt that their interests would be better served by uniting under one banner and one leader. That leader is Alexsandr Sidorovich Feodorov, who has built the Commonwealth up to the power it is today, and set the template for the highly centralised form of government that is employed. The offical language is known as People's Speech; it is a Government Designed combination of features of languages of various provinces in the Commonwealth, most closely resembling Russian. The inhabitants of Tribus Sarmatae are known as "Sarmatians", and claim to trace ancestry to the ancient Sarmatian peoples of Eastern Europe. Although Socialist, "Democracy" in the western sense plays little part in Tribus Sarmatae's government; it is a one-party state, and all policy decisions have to be cleared with the dictator Feodorov first. However, although politically the people have little say in the running of the country, the government works tirelessly to defend civil rights. Private enterprise is illegal, and the income tax rate is 100%, and while initially this appeared to hinder economic progress, the discovery of rich deposits of oil and uranium has provided a great boost to the country's coffers. The government works hard to ensure the safety and security of both the citizens and the state. The state also sees security of both the state and the citizenry as being of key importance; this is evidenced in the complete lack of crime (brought about by a combination of a strong, efficient police force, and progressive policies in both education and social welfare; People simply do not generally see crime as a moral act, and even if tempted the harsh penalties and omniscient police force warn them off). Law and Order consumes a large part of the country's budget, followed closely by national defence (the boot camps of the Sarmatian armed forces have been described as more hellish than Stalingrad, Vietnam and the battle of the Thermopylae combined) and healthcare (the Welfare State has always formed a key part of Government policy). However due to the omnipresence of the state in Sarmatian society, far and away the biggest drain on government resources is administration.
