Geography/Background:

The Armed Republic of Turanskstan is perched on the northern reaches of the globe in what has been historically considered barren, inhospitable land. There is a fair cross-section of flora and fauna, both local and imported and raised. Average summer temperatures range between 60-75F and winter temperatures are offset by a jet stream and range between 0-40F. The citizens of Turanskstan are descendants of several tribes that banded together under the heroic military leader Alexander Turansk in the late 15th century when they came under attack from marauding Arab invaders. Turansks are a mix of Slavic peoples and Scandinavian tribes. While tribal loyalties remain strong, all tribes have a stronger allegiance to the military government of Turanskstan which effectively protects its citizens from external threats while remaining unobtrusive in their private lives.

Economy/Government:

Compulsory military service is combined with free speech and a free market economy. Technological advancements in organic and hydroponic growing have allowed Turanskstan to farm its sparse yet beautiful landscape. It currently produces some of the world’s most nutritious vegetables and most potent cannabis. Automobile manufacturing is the cornerstone of the Turanskian economy. TWM (Turanskstan Motor Works) is the largest manufacturer followed by Alexus and MM (Military Motors).

The Government is official divided into three branches, the Military Branch, the Judicial Branch and the Representative Branch. The true power is wielded by the Military Branch, however it has yet to overrule a Judicial Branch finding, setting an important historical precedent.

The pro-military and pro-business government is ruled by its military leaders. The Commander-in-Chief is a dynastic position inherited directly from the line of Alexander Turansk. The current CINC is Gen. Matthew Trainor. The CINC appoints all positions of true authority. There are tri-annual elections for Congress which is made up 1 representative for every 500,000 people. Congress may suggest governmental action to the CINC but cannot pass or enforce laws without the support of the Military Branch. When Congress has been at odds with the Military Branch it typically has attempted to exert its authority through street protest and work strikes aimed at slowing the vibrant Turanskian economy.

The Judicial Branch is comprised of a circuit of courts culminating with the Supreme Court of Turansk. The Judges rule on all cases. Circuit courts feature 3 Judges, the Supreme Court has 7 Judges. Judges are selected after rigorous training and screening processes. Judges are comprised mostly from a handful of tribes who have carried the tradition through the centuries. The State Police serve under the Judicial Branch.

The largest part of the government is the Military Branch. Its dual mission is to protect the country from external threats and to serve as the executive branch of the government. The military is divided into two forces; the National Defense Force or NDF and the Turansk Expeditionary Force or XF. The Armed Republic requires all its citizens to serve a minimum of 2 years compulsory service. Comradeship formed in the NDF and TEF extends past service and forms important social and economic bonds. The CINC oversees the government as well as the NDF and TEF. Generals serve under the CINC as heads of the NDF and TEF. A more detailed breakdown of the important Turanskian military is outlined below.

Culture and History

The Armed Republic was founded in 1515 by Alexander Turansk. In 1499 the area where Alexander was born came under attack from Arab invaders. He gathered all the local leaders and persuaded them to allow him to lead all the men into battle as a combined force. Alexander was well thought of by most, a specialist in tactics, and had the support of the armies. After two seasons of brutal attacks, Alexander and his forces were ready. He led a small group when compared to the local Arab armies. Reports vary, but historians agree Alexander's army was somewhere between 1000-2000 men. The Arabs had a traveling caravan of over 10,000.

Alexander and his men attacked the war procession with a series of pinpoint assaults, striking sections that had been briefly separated. They used their knowledge of the land to their advantage and did their best to deny the enemy and food or supplies. After several weeks of continuous assaults, Alexander and his band of men began to take on mythical status. They were believed to be able to vanish into thin air, alternately disappearing into thin air, 'like a white wisp' or a ' dark blue cloud' at night.
