Each Nation has a UN Category that is determined by their position within the three freedoms: Civil, Economic, and Political. There are 27 different categories based on the 15 different levels of each of the three freedoms, indicating that the UN Category is based on slightly different background numbers than the freedom levels are.

Keeping this in mind it is then possible for a nation to move from one UN Category to the next without changing their listed freedoms.

UN Categories

The following are definitive and taken directly from game code. As you might guess some UN Categories are very rare.

UN Category Glossary

  • Inoffensive Centrist Democracy:
Where the people have a good mix of political and civil rights as well as security. Obviously most centrist of the UN Categories.
  • Democratic Socialists:
Political Freedoms in this state would be regarded as high, while the government is omnipresent and has much say in the economy.
  • Father Knows Best State:
The government will usually interfere in the lives of everyone. It works like a parent. One does what they think is best.
  • Iron Fist Consumerists:
This is an oppressive state that focuses on the economy. Supply and Demand are the two commandments.
  • Corrupt Dictatorship:
A totalitarian state in which the government will interfere with everything, lowering politcal and civil rights and adopting a fluctuating economic policy.
  • Compulsory Consumerist State:
This is similar to Iron Fist Consumerists, but the government mandates that you spend money to keep the economy up. This is a form of dictatorship, with very little in the way of politcal or civil rights.
  • Scandinavian Liberal Paradise:
High taxes, tons of freedom, but not much emphasis on the economy.
  • Corporate Police State:
One company to rule them all, and to tell you what to buy.
  • Capitalist Paradise:
No restrictions are placed on trade whatsoever, and the economy will come above any rights one might have.
  • New York Times Democracy:
Liberal democracy, with elections heavily influenced by the media.
  • Left-Leaning College State:
What would happen if college students ruled the world. Civil rights are the main priority, followed by political rights.
  • Psychotic Dictatorship:
Corrupt, authoritarian state where everyone is considered the leader's toy.
  • Liberal Democratic Socialists:
Like Democratic Socialists, but more concerened with social reforms.
  • Moralistic Democracy:
A theocratic democracy in which religion influences everything.
  • Authoritarian Democracy:
Not really a democracy, but a dictatorship pretending to be one.
  • Civil Rights Lovefest:
Libertarian rule.
  • Capitalizt:
It's all about business.
  • Left-wing Utopia:
Power to the people.
  • Corporate Bordello:
Free trade, free market, not-so-free merchandise. Other rights can fluctuate.
  • Anarchy:
No state actually exists.
  • Right-wing Utopia:
A conservative state where little change is desired or put into action. Religion will usually play the role of the media.
  • Libertarian Police State:
The state does nothing to impede on your private life, yet will require you to register everything down to your sneakers with a bureau of some sort.
  • Conservative Democracy:
Voting to not vote, and to not change things needing change.
  • Iron Fist Socialists:
The state is omnipresent, and will provide everything for its people.
  • Benevolent Dictatorship:
Somewhat like a Father Knows Best State, but in which the hierachry might pay attention to you.
  • Tyranny by Majority:
Pure democracy without Minority rights.
  • Free-Market Paradise:
Money is what makes your existence mean something.
