The UN Committee on Illicit Arms Trafficking (UNCIAT) was created on May 12, 2004 by the UN resolution 57 Reduce Black Market Arms Sales by a vote of 11,239 to 4,287.

Its goal is to prevent the "illicit trade, including aspects of illicit manufacture, control, trafficking, circulation, brokering, trade, as well as tracing, finance, collection and destruction of small arms" (article 6.b).
