The Principality of Umperia is a state in north Vassfforcia. Accoding to Joan Coromines, the name Umperia derived from the Hyarmendorean word Gwümbedh, which was the name of northwestern Vassfforcia and meant “the Moon’s garden”. However, the Catalonian conquerors changed the name first to Gumperia and then to its modern form, Umperia.
Umperia is located in the north of the country and it borders, Vilnia to the southwest, Western Vassfforcia to the south, the Province of Vassfforcia to the souteast and Vassfforcia la Serenísima to the east. The Lathenruth River marks the southeast boundary of the state.
Umperia is known for its agriculture, wine, beef and beer industries. The finest beer in Vassfforcia is produced by the Cervecería Umperia, located in the suburbs of Istania. Most of its population is composed by little and medium farmers with some people providing services and some working in heavy industry, mainly in the east. One out of five Umperians reside in the metropolitan areas of Istania, Vassfforcia City, or the cities at the margin of Lathenruth River.
The region which is today Umperia and Vilnia was conquered by the Catalonians and added to Vassfforcia in the 12th century while the Most Serene Republic was a Catalan colony as the Mark of West Vassfforcia. Ten years later it became the Principality of Umperia. However, as part of geographical redistribution made after the Reform of 52, Vilnia became an independent state in 1956 with much scandal.

Life in the State
As one of the least populated states in the country (only 5 million people), Umperia is still a state in which many wild areas exist, with three large national parks in the coast and inland. Most of the population depend on agriculture and livestock.
The warm northerly prevailing winds called mestral is one of the most famous characteristics of the region, as it is mentioned in most of the folklore and art of the land. It is said, among those living near the coast, that the mestrel can make people crazy.
The state is covered by ancient fortresses made by the Gáltad, the Hispanic invaders and even a couple made by the Transoxianans (like Aljaizabrahim) in the southwest. The Transoxianan invasions has made the culture of the states of Umperia, Vilnia and Western Vassfforcia a little different from that of the northeast; many Breen and Transoxianan foods, beverages and traditions (for instance, lying on carpets inside pavilions) are common in the region.
Government
</div>Umperia is a principality since the 12th century. It is a parliamentary monarchy with the Prince of Umperia (of the Mádasi family) being the head of government and the Chancellor the head of state. The Senat d’Umperia, the local legislative, is composed of 50 legislators elected by universal vote every five years (last election 2005). The Senat d’Umperia elects the Primer Ministre (the chancellor) among its members after every election. Every municipality elects a local government headed by the Corregidor (mayor), who is helped by the Cabildo (city council).
Umperia sends eighteen senators to the Grand Senate from which 10 are elected by universal vote in ten districts and 8 are elected by proportional representation in the whole state.
Economy
Umperia’s economy is based on a mechanized agriculture and livestock. Most farmers use genetically modified crops and clone livestock, thus having huge profits with their agrobusinesses. However, there are also many organic farmers who stick to the traditional methods. The state is second largest producer of daily products.
The local industry is nearly limited to breweries and spirits distillation companies; however, in the Metropolitan Area of Vassfforcia City and along the eastern border there are many factories, mostly heavy, technology and chemical industries.
Tourism makes also an important part of the states economy, with more than 1'200 km of nearly virgin coasts and 3 large national parks it is a popular ecotourist destination. The ancient fortresses and quaint churches and towns are also very popular places to visit.
Transportation
The state is crossed by two important railroads, running from Vassfforcia City to Zulfía and to Istania. It is also crossed by the coastal superhighway, which runs all along the coast and many smaller local roads which communicate every town and municipality. This, added to the rural way of life that most follow makes it necessary for nearly everyone to have a car, and actually most of the time a truck or an SUV.
</div>Seaports
Most towns located at the coast or by a river have docks for fishers and tourist boats; however the only real port in the state is that of Istania, that is the 6th largest in the country. It’s mainly a ferry port for the ships that sail between Septéntrion and the continent. It is also important for the local industries.
Roads
The main mean of transport in the area are highways and roads that connect every community in the state. It is important to take into account that there are still thousands of kilometers of dirt roads between the farms and haciendas.
Lathenruth River
As one of the most important waterways in the country, it is used mainly to transport raw materials and agriculture and livestock products to Zulfía, Vassfforcia City and from there to the whole northeast and the rest of the country. Most towns along the river have docks for the cargo ships which sail the river back and forth. Navigation in the river is under the responsibility of the northern regional command of the coast guard.
</div>Media
El Sol d’Umperia is the major Catalan published newspaper and the only one published in the state; it has about 1 million readers and is sold all over the northwest. El Sol de Vassfforcia and El Imparcial, both from Vassfforcia City and the local edition of El País, a major paper nationwide, are also available.
Northwestern Vassfforcia is a small market; thus there are not many radio stations, and most of them are only repeating stations from the northeast. Local radio stations transmit most of their programs on Catalan. The Vassfforcian Broadcasting Company, a public-owned company owes studios and transmits on Catalan from Istania; it is the only national company to broadcast in that language, but is it not the only one as Radio Difusió d’Umperia, a privately owed company of Istania, also has two only-Catalan channels and one more in Montaura.
Arts and Entertainment
The Most Serene Republic of Vassfforcia is considered to be a highly intellectual and cultured country[1]; however, the northwest is regarded as the most ignorant part of the country; and this is for a reason. Nearly all the theatres and concert halls in the state are in the capital, however, traditional music and dances are very popular and quaint. Bullfighting is also a very popular form of entertainment.
Education
Primary and secondary education is mostly given with Catalan as the native language of the students; however, in the east the main native language is Spanish. Most colleges in the state specialize on agriculture, livestock, airy and tourist industries. The Universitat Príncepal de Sant Jordi d’Istania is the state’s university and is the best in the northwest.
