Custom infoboxes
When using a template, you need to leave all the fields intact. If you take the "map= |" out of the template, you get the default name for that template. If you leave it in and leave it blank, you get white space. Just put map= | back into the infobox area, and you'll get the effect you seek.
I noticed you are trying to adapt the Generic Infobox. If you'd prefer to make your own tables based on the standard templates for Nations and Regions, you can find the code at Template:Infobox Nation and Template:Infobox Region.
