History

The Most Excellent Republic of Wuddup was founded in May of 1983, by its first Grand Duke, Justin Graham. Fed up by what he perceived as conservative regulation of his private life, along with liberal abandonment of the principles of free speech and minimal government intervention in consumer choice, Graham purchased large amounts of unclaimed land, and declared a new nation as a libertarian paradise. May 19, 1983, is the day the country became a recognized sovereign nation, and is celebrated as "Wuddup Day." Graham originally intended to declare the new nation as Zitland, and in anticipation, officially declared the national currency to be called the oxy. However, much to his chagrin, Graham discovered the existence of another nation with that name. As new residents flocked to the new land, Graham noticed that they often greeted each other with a friendly "Wuddup," a distortion of "What's up?". In honor of the easy-going nature of its citizens, Graham decided to name his country the Grand Duchy of Wuddup, after its unique greeting. In his walks through Wuddup's forests, Graham noticed a distinct species of beautiful red and blue birds. He decided that these birds were worthy of the title of Wuddup's national animal. His regional accent, however, led to his public praise of the proud "Boids." From that moment, the Boid was given its name, and designated as Wuddup's national symbol.

Graham moved the country in a moderate-to-liberal direction, until he left office. The next election saw Conservative leader Kent Starcher elected to the Duchy. In order to ease what he viewed as a punitive tax system, Starcher drastically cut government spending and seized valuable assets from citizens for the Treasury Reserve. Angry with the government over this perceived loss of property rights, citizens staged a violent uprising. The National Guard eventually restored order, but the incident permanently tarnished Starcher's reputation. He was soundly defeated in the following election by Liberal candidate Wyatt Tarantino.

Tarantino attempted to undo much of Starcher's policies, by favoring the granting of individual rights, returning property to citizens, and allowing all forms of speech without reprecussion. While civil and political rights flourished, crime increased dramatically, largely due to the dismantling of the prison system, as crimes were taken off the books or criminals transferred into deterrence programs. Tarantino's commitment to free speech also led to various radical organizations calling for the overthrow of Wuddup's government. With no restraint on anti-government sentiment and no place to house violent criminals, Wuddup again plunged into anarchy. This wave of anarchy lasted for several months until a group of corporate executives stepped in and used their money and influence to restore order, in exchange for representation of their companies in the government.

While the corporate leadership maintained order for the time being, in the long run, it proved detrimental, as corporations used the legislature to undercut and restrict their competition in the economic sphere. The result saw a wave of ugly infighting, and weakening of political and financial power. Once again, angry citizens rose up, disillusioned with the privatization of the government at the expense of consumers and voters, overthrew the corporate government, and once again brought about anarchy. Without a unified police force or military under a solid government, the wave of anarchy lasted nearly a year. Eventually, order was restored, and the Liberal Party once again held the Office of the Grand Duke, as the people of Wuddup elected Isador Goldstein.

Goldstein's tenure was remarkably uneventful, though he moved the country to more liberal social policies, while increasing government spending. While the Liberals retained the Duchy, the Libertarian Party gained control of the Parliament. During the next elections, the charismatic Libertarian candidate, Casey Tyler, ascended to power based on radical new ideas that appealed to the electorate who grew tired of "more of the same." Upon winning the election, Tyler began implementing many of these changes: the country was changed from a Grand Duchy to a Republic, and the Grand Duke became the President. Wuddup also gained a new, more elaborate flag, and the national motto was changed from the nonsensical "Hoodly-hoo" to "Carpe Scrotum," roughly translated as "Seize life by the balls." President Tyler pushed for redistricting, sending Wuddup from the North Pacific into the Council of Narnia, and reluctantly pushed the traditionally isolationist country into the United Nations. President Tyler reaffirmed Wuddup's founding as a Libertarian paradise, and undertook a series of programs to place power and freedom back into the hands of the individual.

Politics

Wuddup has four major political parties: Liberal Party, Conservative Party, Green Party, and Libertarian Party. Other, smaller political parties have met with minimal success.

Presidency

The President of Wuddup serves as its Head of Government. Until 2007, this position was filled by a Grand Duke. The President serves four-year terms, with a two-term limit.
