The gate effect is  basically an emitter causing an omni-directional, infinite sized transwarp conduit. Unfortunately access from anywhere else but the starting point will cause an immedieate return (at warp 45) to said starting point. The gate is almost always crowded for this reason. To alieviate this, a second gate is being built and portible gate emitters are being created but due to instability problems the emitters must be placed outside the ship and must be easily detachible.

The expansion and contraction of gravity waves allows Blackgrue ships to travel in any direction with engines completely emerged within their ships (making it impossible to disable). This also allows .95 of C to be achieved by all ships which helps to alieviate the threat of FTLi.
