The University of Ωn-Baranxiž (Γηβainahuggur Ωn-Baranxiž) is the oldest public university of Baranxtu, located in the capital Ωn-Baranxiž. The university is known for its high standards and thorough programs, and while offering all-encompassing courses, is especially renowned for its Languages, Literatures, History, Theology, Philosophy and Social Sciences faculties.
Over two semester each year, courses are taught mainly in Baranxeï, Asuaneï and English.
The University of Ωn-Baranxiž works in association with the University for Applied Sciences of Ωn-Baranxiž, which takes a more practical approach towards education, whereas the University of Ωn-Baranxiž takes a more theoretical stance.
With approximately 93,000 students each semester and employing 1,754 professors and 28,000 other people, it is the largest university of Baranxtu. It currently offers 276 courses of studies, the largest amount of any university in Baranxtu.
History
The University of Ωn-Baranxiž was founded in 1723 as a school to educate the priesthood of the theocratic colony. Although later services were also offered to regular citizens, it was not until the overthrowal of the Ggurυa-Ahadυa dynasty in the First Baranxtuan Civil War (1810-1814) that the university experienced quick and vast expansion into other areas. The majority of the modern-day faculties were established during that time.
In the 1850s, a number of these faculties were split from the university to create the University for Applied Sciences of Ωn-Baranxiž. Both universities, however, remained in close association, and studying at both at the same time is possible.
Campus
The center of the campus of the University of Ωn-Baranxiž is the Grand Plaza, where the Grand Hall and the Stele of Universal Peace, both constructed in the 1820s, are located.
To accomodate the needed facilities and infrastructure of the university, the campus has grown to among the largest campuses in the world. Originally, it was not planned to be a campus university, but in the late 19th century, the whole university was restructured and centered on one site, creating what is today colloquialy known as the University District (Rajjy Γηβainahuggurnu), a miniature city within Ωn-Baranxiž.
The majority of the campus lies in the district Amhasina and extends into Ωn-Baranxiž Ẽdamu and Šωnran. However, legally, it belongs to neither and is a Special Administration Zone of Ωn-Baranxiž instead.
Over the years, a number of businesses have established themselves on campus to cater to the non-educational needs of the students and the staff. Today, a number of restaurants (from fast food to "fancy"), cinemas, gyms, swimming pools, malls and arcades can be found on campus.
As privately-owned cars are banned on campus, students have to get around either on bikes, by foot or by public transport. Subsequently, the campus of the University of Ωn-Baranxiž has one of the most dense segments of the Ωn-Baranxiž subway and bus network.
The Theater of the Golden Arts, the most renowned theater of Ωn-Baranxiž, is also located on campus, built in the 1840s.
